I'm leaving it in on mine. Love that sound!

I had it off for awhile.. Definitely makes the cold starts much more smooth.. The pump is there simply to warm the cats for emissions reasons, because the precious metals inside do not catalyze the exhaust gases (reducing emissions) until the cats reach operating temperature. I guess leaving it on makes up for my de-catted turbo 7 series

Does the "cold start" only happen if the temperatures is under a certain temp? I do not really notice my car has ever been loud on startup but I am basically stock. However I live in warm weather and coldest my car has seen is probably 50 degrees.

No, it will turn on even if it's 100 degrees out. You won't notice it too much with the stock exhaust, but modified it's a huge difference.

Ok I heard what you guys mean after my exhaust was modded. It is hella loud from outside but if you are in the car it is not really all that loud. Standing outside the car though it sounds terrifying! I do not see a reason to get rid of it. Why? Might as well have the cats work as well as possible if you are going to keep them anyway.

I would have kept mine, but I work in production and the car was so bassy with my akra evo that it would ruin shots and I would have to wait for a cut to start up and drive away.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it searching. Is there any way to remove the cold start without getting a tune? If reduced emissions are really the only benefit from having it in place, I'm willing to kill the planet a little every time I start my car.

Mine is always in a garage and luckily i don't have neighbors that close to hear my startup but when I had the cold start...that garage would be a shakin'! It did sound so good and exotic however, I started scaring old folks at a nearby mall when i started my car to leave to go home. So not wanting to contribute to anyone's heart attack, I took out the cold start and the car is so much nicer...and tamer...but when you want to show it off, it does the trick. It's like a dual personality exhaust. I like it

So no long term effects or damage to the car by removing the cold start?

If you have cats it might be a little harsh on them and cold emissions will be higher, but as far as hurting the car it's all good.

So as someone who has experience coding and programming, the only way you know of to remove the cold start is a tune? TIA!

It's the proper way to remove it. Other than that, you could disconnect the secondary air pump as well, but this would certainly trigger fault codes as there is a little airflow sensor in the secondary air system.

So the only way to remove the cold star is with a tune? ($999 usd from BPM, ESS, Evolve, etc.). There is no coding option for these?, I already have a tune and $999 more seems a little expensive only for reducing the sound on the morning.

If you already have a tune then contact your tuner and see if they can remove the cold start. As you mentioned in your post, all of the known reputable tuners do this.

Cold start is not just a simple on/off flag like coding is. It's the engine mapping itself, so you need a tune.

I agree with what everyone said here. I liked the sound it made, raw and more bassy. Problem is I don't live alone and you could here it through the garage up to the second floor. It was about 85db with primary cat delete & stock exhaust. I can image how bad it would be with a rear section as well.
Removed cold start and it sounds a lot more civilized. Measured about 80db, its only 5db but it makes a world of difference. Operates a lot smoother too. Since you need a tune anyway to remove CEL, I'd ask your tuner of choice to just provide 2 files. One with cold start on & one with it off and you can decide which you like better.

My tuner doesn't have the choice for deleting the cold star neighter for removing the CEL. It is not a BMW especialized tuner: UPSOLUTE. Maybe I will have to pay for another tune like ESS, Evolveor or BPM.
