I think I broke my muffler - Confirmed

Have a generation 1.0 M-performance exhaust, probably have had it for 7 years or. so. I have the cracks that these develop but they are small, perhaps 1" long one on each can and haven't changed at all over several years.

This weekend I'm running 3 day event at VIR, car has been great, no issues, but leaving the track today, at minimal throttle opening I have a new huge drone at 2,000 only and a big rattle that sounds like a 2 metal grates banging against each other.

I can't really look very well under the car, but the clamps are tight and everything looks fine, but I have now this new noise that's really impressively loud but only at 2,000 rpm.

Anyone ever have this happen? I suspect, if it's really the MPE and nothing else, this unit might be junk, which is too bad as it's a really nice sounding exhaust.

i have exactly same thing happening right at 2k rpm but it happens only after i installed catless x-pipe. My sound most likely happens because of the leak at X-pipe to muffler connection. The clamps are really tight but i suspect that they have stretched over time due to heat or whatever and are not squeezing pipes properly allowing leak to happen. Does this sound happen every time or under the load? For example, if you were to go downhill say accelerating from traffic light and down hill when car does not require much throttle, does this sound happen as well?

You probably just cracked it from the high heat and cooling cycles from tracking. I think those things crack on the top, not always on the mounts.

Gen 1 MPE is known to crack everywhere. Iconel is very thin and not the strongest material.
Remove the exhaust from the car and examine it carefully, you might need it professionally welded back together.

Well, got the car up on a lift and it's obvious what the failure is. My little 1" cracks that had been stable for years grew. On the left hand can it's still one inch and no change, on the right-hand can the crack used to start middle of the can now goes another 2" towards the middle of the car, and has a "U" shape a the end, but the biggest change is the crack now extends to the right back corner of the can and actually makes the turn up the side. Measured it with a tape and it's 10" long now, and there's an air gap along perhaps 6" of it.

I think it's junk.

How durable has that repair been? That's just like mine except it looks like you have a couple of branches that I don't have.

I have no idea . It's not my MPE 1 .
It can be done , but it requires a weld specialist for Inconel .

I'll stick with my Oem. exhaust mod . and it sounds even better .

There is no "venting" of the pressure on a MPE V2... That's not what those two channels do.

The holes serve to avoid cracks , it reduces the internal pressure .
Here the v2 with the holes..
I must have been misinformed. Sorry.

Common misconception. They don't have any communication to the internal chambers of the muffler. They are fully walled off. It's just a design change to allow pressure relief on the support structure of the mufflers' exoskeleton so to speak, but they don't vent anything.

Good to know, at least now we won't have people drilling holes in their MPEv1.
