Just to add on, it's rubbish for a company to think they pay you too much if you drive a nice car. If u drive a shit box to work will they be more inclined to think that you need a raise?

No. I already drive my Porsche Cayenne to work. That generates enough whispers as it is. No way in hell I would also show up in an M3.

Funny though my boss made a comment about my "new BMW" last yr when I drove it to Salt Lake. Doesnt seem like most of my co workers are into cars like I am tho.

I stopped really worrying about this yrs ago. I remember once a bunch of colleagues commented on my (then) new car (volvo S60 R really??). I tend to care less what others think now. Like others said, its def something I dont volunteer.

Sucks and it blows. CPG (Consumer Package Goods) companies traditionally are not high margin industries. You interact with a wide range of folks from low level union folks all the way to upper management. The industry tends to rationalize that we have to appear frugal and "pinch every penny". Also "usually" you are not surrounded by folks that love cars. As you get into upper management they would rather you demonstrate the frugalness. If my boss had his way I would be driving a Ford Taurus to work and that would be "an extremely nice" car. 2 years ago before the M3 I bought a Lexus RX350. Took grief for that as well.

At the end of the day I don't care. I am married and my wife also has a very good career so we are fortunate to be a duel income household and I can afford an M3 now. I say to them all.

It's not so much about caring what others think, but if you are in a high position, and are at the upper end of the pay scale where you work, there is nothing to be gained by flashing it in everyone's face. People get jealous. Doesn't matter if you worked you ass off to get where you are, people who haven't will still be jealous.

I can feel ur pain I work in sales and everybody is always complaining about not making any money and I always double me my sales quota. Then I bought a brand new z06 and when I pulled up they talked about it for months and always make comments to me. But I did not care and my manager told me to not worry about it and buy gtr next time. Let the haters hate.

I drive to work every day but i'm in the D.C. Metro Area where there are just as many high end cars as there are main line cars.

yes, my e90 m3 is my DD and drive it in everyday, but then again I work in a medical building...so the MD's drive in with their AMG's and P-cars as well...I actually conversate with them more since I got my M3...of course it's car talk...but nice to have something else to talk about aside from patients...

+1. I've been working at my current job for a bit over 2 years and I've had the M3 the entire time, however word is just spreading recently that it's my car. When I came back after being gone for 2 week during the holiday, there was a post-it on my desk that said "I absolutely think your car is amazing" lol.

One of my co-workers picked up his e90 M3 a few months after I started and it was stock until I recently sold him my Dinan exhaust. A couple of my other co-workers picked up e92 M3's during the holidays and they say I'm a bad influence with the modding encouragement

Yeah my job is kinda the same way. Everyone cries poverty but spends all there money on all other stupid hobbies. But if I chose to save my money to have a nice car I'm the guy doing something wrong. People are always going to hate.

I used to drive my M3 to work everyday and everyone in my office disliked me
(I work in an environment where not driving a 40+ MPG car or not taking public transportation is considered taboo.) except for my boss who is a car gal herself and owns an ML63....which she drove 90% city. I telecommute now so I don't really care anymore .

I'm a high school drop out. When i quit high school in 1996 I went from Eastern Canada to western Canada where i grew up.

I immediately started construction work with my brother. I met a nice girl who was from Quebec and who's father owned a construction business back east.
We fell in love and I moved back east in 1997. She was in university and I started work with her Dad and Brother .

Once she finished school and got a job , things were good for us.
A few years later I was made crew chief , and had the opportunity to drive a company truck to work and on weekends as I wished.

After two or three years , my girlfreind and I bought a Subaru STI (2003).
So I begged my boss to let me drive the car to work for one whole year ( this caused a minor problem as I was responsible for hauling a tool trailer and other stuff pretty much everyday to work), but he made it possible for me to do so .

I was then the happiest man alive at age 25

He took back my privilege of driving the car to work a year later as planned

My gf and I bought a imported 2008 R32 with 10 000 km on the odo a few years later .
Me and her have since separated, sold our house and went our ways . She with the R32 , me with the STI.
That was three years ago . Since then I purchased the 1M ( i loved it ) !!!!
It was my first BMW , I had never even driven one before
So after a summer of driving it , I decided to trade the STI for a 2003 E46 M3 as a winter car. I had found a suitable one at 153 000 kms nearby , as my STI had 120 000 kms .

The dealership owner's best friend happenned to be a big fan of STI's so the owner himself accepted the trade " as is " as a favor to his associate.

Two winters later and I now switched the 1M for a brand new E92 M3 that I only put 600 kms on before puting it to sleep for winter.

I absolutly love driving these cars to work when I can .......

I am now 34 years old and work with valiant men who are close too twice my age, and have been working for this company for 40 years.

I also work with young valiant guys who are making their way up the ladder at different paces with different levels of enthusiasm .

Of course the brightest of these men will understand that I must make twice or even more what they make , while doing a job that may seem " much the same " as their's.....

Some will understand , some won't.....wether it be by jealousy or by ego , everyone will have something to say .

Wether it's my "age to salary" ratio that sparks ridiculous scenarios of brown nosing or drug dealing to attain my means. Or even if the person fully understands and can figure out and accept that some people deserve and should be paid more than others , THEY WILL STILL TALK CRAP and judge

Only a select few , whom I call FREINDS , say they are glad for me and what I built for myself .
And I love them for that.......Almost as much as i love driving one of my cars to work when situation permits

theres always haters ... same thing when i work at my friends shop and customers ask how i can afford that car and i explain well this is my second "fill in" type of job if that makes sense.

I remember way back in 2005 taking a second job at Blockbuster (to help furnish our new place) and the looks I would receive as I walked to my used 2001 325CI was amusing to say the least. My point is people are going to judge you regardless. You worked hard for it so enjoy your car.

Drive mine to work every day.

Only about 15 people in my building know it's mine and they have all been stoked. Giving out free rides and letting some (whom I trust), drive it has no doubt helped with the goodwill. I also, do not work in a sales oriented business, where it appears to matter for some.

Only issue I've had is other BMW 3 series owners parking RIGHT next to it on the weekends... when the lot is almost entirely empty. Happened 5 weekends out of the 10 I've had the car back in the states. Yes, I work weekends.

My e92 is my daily driver; I take it to work, pickup groceries, go to school, etc etc. I saved money and bought this car to drive it and not to worry about what others think. If people give you any issues, its their problem. I bet as soon as you drive it to work, you'll get the opposite reaction; people will think its an awesome car and give you high fives

This is very positive talk...ok.....but not every boss is positive about a ///M3 !
For example...your company has a negative time...and you step out your ///M3....???

Sometimes yes, sometimes no, although the "no" times are for pragmatic reasons: occasionally need people or things in the back seat, mostly, so I drive the beater on those days.

There are both car lovers and some "success haters" at my place of employment, and I embrace the former and ignore the latter . . . As you might imagine by my nickname, I (like many others here) worked my ass off to get where I am: 5+ years of only sleeping 3-4 hours a night, working 70 hour weeks, etc. So I pull no punches when it comes to my reasonably successful outcome and the things I enjoy . . .
