>18mpg is unreal. I once got it up to 22 mpg on a 5 hour trip to Switzerland, but everywhere else in Germany I was lucky to get 15 mpg on all highway driving. This was going 20 minutes to and from work every day with no signals and only a few stop signs. Now that I'm in DC, I am getting 9 mpg. My car is very thirsty.

I was averaging 16 MPG, spirited driving.
Today i went on a 100 mile trip, gas'd up tank and reset fuel consumption and drove conservatively with a few bursts. I got a little over 21 MPG. When i was going downhill i achieved 26 MPG by feathering the throttle, that quickly diminished when i had to go uphill...

I agree. All this obsessing over a few MPG one way or the other makes no sense to me. 3 MPG difference comes down to what?... 20 bucks a month? If 20 bucks is really worth all the time spent thinking about it and obsessively driving slower than you normally would, not taking advantage of the whole reason for this car to exist, you're in the wrong car.

This 2 litre oil burner is a 236 ft-lbs torque, engineering marvel. BMW needs to bring their engineering masterpiece, the 330d, to these shores lickity split.

I average 17+ MPG in a mix of City and Highway. When on the highway for about 20 miles one way I'm going about 70. I thought the was bad until I read some of the other posts

driving this car in a manner that respects fuel economy is downright pointless in my opinion. this car is lacking down low and really turns on at 4k, so trying to keep it under that to me seems like a waste.
yup, you'll save a few hundred bucks or even k's a year driving like a granny, but think about the 75k you wasted on the damn car. |

My 550 sport computer said 19.7 for the life of the car (20K miles).
My M3 computer says 15.7 for the life of the car (3,569 miles). Drive it the least bit hard and you are at 12. |

I average out at approx 18.6mpg (UK gallons) which probably wouldn't be closer to 16mpg (US). I drive mostly short runs and seldom on motorways so though not great it's very little worse than my S5 was and considering the performance difference I think not to bad.

I was able to get 22mpg for a stretch of about 400 kms of highway at around 130km/h (80mph) while driving through a country where I could not buy duty-free gas. It wasn't easy and I made frequent use of the cruise control (which works well).
As an aside, it would be awfully nice to have a bigger gas tank in this car...something like 80 liters would be nice. On the autobahn, I usually see around 10mpg, on the autoroutes a more reasonable 16-18mpg. Rarely drive in the city here, but it quickly falls down around 10-12mpg. |

I get 17.3 - mostly around the Austin area. Even though I do punch it frequently, it still seems to get the same mileage... I am pleasantly surprised.

Automobile mileage
Apologies for resurrecting this somewhat aged thread, but I saw an article in the current issue of Automobile where they tried to get the max mileage out of several cars, including an M3 (in CA traffic). Result: 25mpg. Pretty impressive...
