The results were as expected, meaning I was able to get the software versions and details but got a strong pushback on the request to update the DME software. The argument they used was coming from the opinion and point of view of a BMW master technician. Even so I had a CEL light with reduced emission warnings popping up in March and I had to take it in twice (the problem reappeared after picking up the car and driving for 25 miles). They just stated that the O2 sensors (first time the pre-cat; second occurrence the post cat) were faulty and they replaced them.
But it is hard for me accept, because I work in the software industry and I know that decisions like these can lead to problems in the future. I have seen and experienced several of them. They just delay the decision and the expenses, best for them would be these problems occur outside the 4 year warranty period.
So now enough of the ranting and allow me to publish my findings.
- The production date is 2009-11-19
- The software integration level is E89X-09-09-516 – which means
- The version is from September 2009
- The version date is after the what seems to be mandatory software update date.

My questions are
- Is there data out there which would point to improvements? Those could be horsepower, torque, idling, cold start behavior, warm up time, increase in MPG, etc…
- If not, what would be the recommended software version, I should use?
Reason: I am considering the go on a dyno and use the current version and then with the newer software version.

Why would I do this – Just to provide more data.

Thanks for reading,
Guenther
The "data" provided so far is mostly anecdotal and is contained in this thread. Many people have reported improvements in power, braking and steering. A few have reported no change or perceived loss of power. Other than that, I have provided my dyno sheets showing the gains that I saw. I believe I am the only one who dynoed different versions back to back thus far. If you plan to have the dealer update the car, you will only have one option for new software, the latest version.

My car doesn't rev as high or up and down like it used to during cold starts. So I would say cold starts are improved. Warm starts are now "cammy" which wasn't the case before.

i had my software updated tuesday to the 07/12 version, ista/p 47.2.001, from the 03/08 version it had previously (clearly never updated).the car feels quicker, smoother, and just crisper.it is of course hard to eliminate the placebo effect, but i'm pretty attuned to my car.

the dealer charged me 1 hour of labor, which i thought was reasonable.the download took about 2.5 hours, and then the technician test drove it twice with me to be sure everything was working right, and had to correct a false reading on the wheel angle sensor.he said you usually have to make a few adjustments like that after the update.

all in all,well worth doing.

Yup, looks like the ones rolling out now are in fact 240E.

Just finished tuning my car on 240E, feels great. Pulls like a freight train. The low end/jumpyness I complained about before was most likely a result of the low pressure fuel pressure sensor going awry. After the dealer replaced that it's smooth as butter again.

Now before many people ask me if it's worth it to upgrade from 231E to 240E, my answer is that it is not worth it. Now if it comes as part of a tune, then I would say that it may be worth it then, especially for cars on older revisions.

Does that mean we will get a free update to 240E from the dealer soon?

robbiedawg: Yes - anything as of 47.1.100 will contain 240E

bbs lm: Not sure about this yet - BMW seems to make it appear that it's an isolated issue to the UK, but I think it affects every later BMW with v46.3/46.6 or earlier software.

I have been updating a few cars remotely to prevent the key reprogramming bug that allows people with the right tools to steal the car.

Thanks, Mike.
I think I'll just go ahead and do the update.

Evolve has stated in the past on they can provide the update for you, it would be best you contacted them directly since you already own the tool.
So, if we go in for the start/stop update, they'll pretty much have to give us the newest software?

I'm pleased to announce that the dyno on my car with 240E software was completed earlier today.

The car broke 430whp!!!

Torque gains after applying the BPMSport Stage II tune were massive at ~20 ft/lbs in the midrange.

So - we know that 240E and 231E is good software. We also know that both of them can achieve gains when properly tuned. And this is on 91 octane as well

I will be creating a thread shortly with dyno graphs/pictures/videos/ and further information.

Mike

Incredible. Only one other tuner is in that ballpark on a stock block naturally aspirated M3 -- M3DCTBT. Everyone else is stuck right around 400 or just below for RWHP in SAE calibration.

Looking forward to the detailed post and dyno and hoping you share your mods. I suspect you will keep your tuning secrets secret.
