New E92, Some thoughts on things

Hey Guys

Posted this one on another forum, wanted to get your opinion on this as well.

Just to follow up on my new M3. Just picked it up from the dealership 5 days ago. Clocked in 300 over miles in the past week or so!!! WOOOTT! Can't wait for the break-in period to be over. Pushed the car a little bit over the weekend, went over 5500 rpm by a slight bit on a few occasions. Hopefully that won't affect the break-in period too much.

I have been driving mostly on city roads and have been getting around 11 - 12 MPG. It's crazy, I had to refuel my tank twice in the last week or so. Any thoughts on this??

Also, I currently reside in Philadelphia and some of you might know.. the city roads here are TERRIBLE. Pot holes everywhere and the surface is incredibly uneven.. furthermore, there roads are lined with stupid SEPTA tracks!! ARGGH. But anyways, I was driving down pretty fast and went down a pretty big bump. The car jerked a little because I put my suspension on the stiffest, I-Drive froze for a split second and came back on. Any thoughts on this??

Anyway, here are some pics I took today after my first round to the detaling shop.

Yeah... my thoughts are you should slow down a bit on city streets you will avoid the crappy MPG that way and it will save your suspension. Leave the Speed Racer mentality on the track.

car looks great. the bump probably just jolted the system. nothing big to worry about, i wouldn't think. just be mindful of your suspension settings in and around town with all those road obstacles.

Congratuations! Looks great! Mileage will improve a little after breakin, depends on how you drive of course. My iDrive is a little glitchy, has locked up a couple of times
Careful you don`t bend a rim on those bumps
What part of Philly are you in? Saw you were in the Art Museum parking lot.
Have you driven the Lincoln Drive, Kelly Drive, West River Drive loop yet?

Mileage in town is pretty bad. If you want better mileage driving in the city you need to drive in D-mode and be very gentle with the gas pedal. Cruising at 60-70 mph I get between 25 and 27mpg.

Yea I am sending in my car for tinting on Monday.

Any suggestions on percentage? I was thinking of 30% but the people over the Shades of Gray Tinting suggested 40% to keep the look classy.

I don't want the car to look like a ricer, any suggestions??

wow.. 25 - 27 mpg is ridiculous.. verrry impressive. I guess cruise control is going to be my new best friend.

I am still averaging 11mpg in the city.. it really is taking a pinch. It is weird because I don't drive aggressively except the occasional overtaking, etc.

But so far, I have spent 90% of my time in the city, driving up and down, starting and turning off the car.

washington must be all downhill because i doubt you can get 27 mpg just cruising. the best i got was 20 on a flat freeway just cruising at 70

I could swear at some point on a trip down to Portland I looked at the screen and hitting recalculate and it saying something like like 36mpg. I was doing a rather pathetic steady state 60mph in 6th.

Given I myself find that hard to believe, it probably was actually not *36* but *26*mpg. I just remember being amazed at the time. Given I normally get about 11mpg in the city, either would have been equally stunning to me.

36 is not totally expected. It doesn't take that much energy to keep a car going steady state. Esepecially if the wind is with you a little bit or maybe you were going slightly downhill. When you reset it at that point, it might read 36 or whatever you are getting at that moment, then watch it plumet the first time you come to a stop then get going again. Or even accelerate up to 75. Or go uphill. It all averages out... hence the word "average".
