Is the stock battery standard lead acid or AGM/Gel... I can't really find any info saying which kind of battery it is..

Make a note of the P/N printed in the battery label and use www.realoem.com/bmw to cross-reference it... that will tell what you got for sure.

nm i figured it out.. they had a sticker saying "sealed battery" that was covered up by another sticker on top.. so mine is agm/gel and the battery is black.

What is the battery capacity (in AH and A) listed in the label?

I read somewhere that the black case batteries are AGM and the white case are lead acid.

My '08 (build date 06/08) also has the black battery, with the above numbers (first said 'S:' and second 'AW:'). Maybe those initials mean different markets . But yes, it's weird neither one is a US p/n.

I was just going to replace it with an Interstate from Sam's or Champion from Walmart, thinking it was lead acid, but I MUCH prefer an AGM in case of an accident, and the trunk is where they last the most. Will just have to order one when the time comes, since nobody carries it locally. And can't imagine how much only local dealer in town wants when they charge $25 for a littler of TWS .

My build date is April 2008 and I also have the same part numbers on my battery:

S: 61 21 7 575 327
AW: 61 21 6 924 022

It also says Banner, which I googled and found to be an Austrian car battery manufacturer. No idea why realoem does not list our battery number

It's also black which I assume means AGM. Can I replace with a non AGM battery or does it have to be AGM?

You can replace the AGM with a lead acid but you will have to do special coding to do so.

If I were you.. I would replace with AGM with same specifications.
