I don't think you're listening. You can't make the M3 sound anything like the Ferrari. Anyone who thinks they can is apparently confusing loud staccato with piercing wail.

It's like saying your sound system can make Vivaldi sound like Prodigy.

+1 the cgt and c63 couldn't sound more different. If anything the cgt sounds similar to an lfa. The c63 sounds like a balsy muscle car.

Rough crowd today. I think to answer the OPs question it's best to say that there are lots of factors that go into the sound of a car. There is obviously the engineering -- the size and speed of the engine, firing order, exhaust characteristics, etc. -- as has been pointed out. But it's also an art. Manufacturers spend lots of time designing a car and that includes getting the sound right. In the end, all cars have a distinctive sound. A Ferrari sounds like a Ferrari. An M3 sounds like an M3, not a Ferrari. Indeed, an E46 M3 sounds not like an E92 M3. If you want a Ferrari sounding car buy a Ferrari.

But IMO, the M3 sounds pretty good. It could be louder, but it's nothing that an aftermarket exhaust system can't solve. They are all pretty "exotic" sounding exhausts too. Just take a listen to some of the video clips that have been posted. I'm totally happy with the M3 engine/exhaust sound. It's very refined as compared to say, the C63 and IS-F which to me sound like American V8s. For the money the M3 sounds the best. If you're not happy I think it is because not much of the character of the exhaust note comes through into the cabin. Roll the windows down, cut up the exhaust, or buy an aftermarket system and you'll probably be able to hear it better.

Cheers.

IMO the akrapovic is the closest youll get to getting the s65 to sound like an exotic. In any case, if I wanted the m3 to sound like a ferrari, I'd buy a ferrari.

I clearly stated in my original post I understand its not a ferrari and I do not want a ferrari. My question was why can't this engine sound like one from an engineering point of view. Why waste time posting a comment to go buy a ferrari. makes no sense

Reading-comprehension problem. Many suffer from it.

Don't feel bad! I always asked myself the same question. I even thought of the Zonda using an AMG engine and sounds like no other.

I guess asking how to tune an exhaust for different sounds may have been a better question but at the heart of my question is truly-with a v8 that revs like a ferrari-to me it COULD likely sound similar.

I think the answer is it can with the right xpipe and exhaust. Not quite but similar. Then the remaining is due to the crank difference and firing order perhaps. However I did find some vids of people with x pipes and exhausts.

That is encouraging that you can sound ilke a lambo-that is the sound I was thinking. To me exotic is prob more what I meant
