I didn't make my point right at all, I think I was kind of tired and my brain wasn't functioning at 100%.

What I REALLY meant was that although a watch is not an "investment", you probably won't lose much, if any, money on a higher end one either if you ever want to get rid of it.

I still say to the OP, go with a Tag. You're young and there's lots of time for more expensive watches (IWC, Cartier, Rolex etc) in your lifetime.

When you buy a watch you buy it for YOU. If it happens to impress other people that’s just a bonus.

Sure many people can’t see spending alot on a watch but they will spend alot on other things trying to impress people.

As you go through life you start out at a low level and as you become more successful you get nicer things. Cars, Houses, Clothing, Shoes, Watches, ect, ect

Plus with the watches I buy if and when I do decide to flip them I will either be breaking even or even making a small profit.

Try to do that with a BMW

A fine watch/timepiece is to a man like an expensive purse/handbag is to a woman

Speedmaster water resistant rating really sucks and the NASA model which was worn on the moon (best looking version) isn't scratch resistant which really sucks. I was going to buy a Speedmaster myself but I didn't for those reasons.

If you want to spend a grand on a watch, I would go with Movado. I have had 3 and get compliments galore on them.

OR

You can go to www.ireplicastore.com and get a nice replica for cheap (cheap as in low cost, not low quality). I have bought 5 watches from this site and have fooled many watch enthusiasts. Chances are, 90% of the people won't be able to tell. I recently picked up a Panerai rep and love it...

Just picked up a Tag Carrera, LOVE IT. Got it because it fit my personality and its an added bonus that everyone gives me compliments on it. Wanted a Omega or Breitling or used Rolex but decided I didnt need to impress people with a fancy watch name, even though TAG is up there, so I bought the watch that made ME happy =) go with the carrera, couldnt be happier with it. IMO Omega's dont look that great for 1k more then a TAG

Movados are nice. I tried out their new 800 series? but the faces were around 44mm and it was just about 2mm too big for my wrist, o well

Sinn U1 around $1200. Best watch I ever owned! Very limited. If you can find one get it.

The U1 is designed to be virtually impervious to water penetration. The U1 case is made from the same steel that is also used in the construction of the outer hull of submarines. The steel was procured by Sinn from a steel supplier to Emden GmbH, one of Germany’s North Sea shipbuilding yards who construct submarines from the very same steel. This submarine steel is not only extraordinarily sea water resistant (PRE value up to 38), it possesses also the highest anti-magnetic quality.

Because of the special steel used from the submarine steel manufacturer, the case resists the effects of exposure to salt water and salt water environments. Tegimented bezel.

The uni-directional ratchet operated rotating bezel is also milled from this submarine steel. The indices are machined directly into the bezel without the use of bezel inserts, which can corrode or come loose at deep depths. The international testing lab of Germanischen Lloyd has tested the U1, and determined that the watch can be certified as water resistant to 1,000 meters. This same firm tests submarines for their ability to withstand the effects of underwater use.

The watch has an automatic mechanical movement, operating at 28,800 beats per hour, shockproof according to DIN 8308 specification and anti-magnetic according to DIN 8309 specification.

Matte black dial with date at 3, Super Luminova on hands and markers, and striking red seconds hand complete the design. Other features include sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, and rubber strap with double push deployant buckle and fliplock safety clasp.

For christ' sake people, it's a WATCH. If you need a watch to impress people, perhaps you should be focusing more on your demeanor, professionalism, and charisma. They are apparently lacking.
some people feell the same way about buying a car for 50 k. ill be down to shell out for both.

I have a very nice Rolex Presidential; a well intentioned but almost ironic gift. I never wear it because I either feel like a superficial, nuevo riche tool, or poseur (is that real?). Wearing income designators of all form and little function to explain their priority is socially desperate. I much prefer my ironic but interesting watches from Tokyoflash.com (bazar Japanese timepieces, my faves are the Scope and Binary). But watches are almost obsolete in the age of the ever-present cell phone. If you need man-bling, get a high quality vintage pocket watch and chain it to your lapel. Now thats a pussy magnet she's not going to overlook. BMW's are pretty much the stereotype of the bourgeois, but at least our cars are designed with the automotive performance experience as their purpose. With a status wristwatch, you'd be hard pressed to find a single area in which it justifies a fraction of its expense beyond material composition (that is if you even get one made from precious metal). I suppose I work in academia, where having an uber-expensive watch (or car for that matter) is generally looked upon as a sign of superficiality. You metrosexual guys "buying something for you" are funny. I bet it really adds a 'depth of presence' to your left hand as you do other things for yourself.

you seem to know your numbers. how much your car depreciate the minute you drove it off the lot? it was not a smart investment now was it? but we all have something we splurge on and for some people it happens to be watches

I have a rolex, only wear it on the weekends because i work mon-fri and sometimes i have to stick my hands in the engine bay. but normally mon-fri i wear my Panerai, ESQ (Movado owns them i believe), or my Omega.

I found buying expensive watches is like buying BMWs, Benzs, or Lexus'....
Its more of a passion. I have a Chopard and with that watch i could buy many many movados, but yet, i prefer my ESQ.

but anyways, If you want to get something elegant, fancy, with a major branded name go for Movado, ESQ, or Omega (some are for around $900)

I think the IWC Big Pilot watch is the ultimate watch with a superior presence that's the ultimate automatic watch with a lot of class. It can run for 7 days without you wearing it. It starts just over 10,000 and the platinum model cost just over 39,000 dollars.
