Catless - Macht Schnell Test Pipes
I installed test pipes yesterday. No tune yet. I have a few questions if anyone can help out
1) Is it normal to hear a poof type of noise in between shifts? I'm assuming the increased exhaust noise is making this more apparent 2) Is it normal to run hotter oil temps after this mod? It seems I'm over 210 just a tad and I was always at 210 or under prior to the test pipes being installed. Thanks

Don't know about the poof noise. Higher oil temps could be due to the fact the car is likely running a more lean mixture due to increased airflow. Lean mixture will result in higher cylinder temps.

The noise of the shift becomes more of an "explosion", which you hear a lot more when fully catless. Your oil temps should not be running much higher than normal, maybe your driving the car harder/hotter outside????
Read your codes and see if anything came up. |

It was definitely hotter today in Chicago so maybe that's it coupled by higher revs than normal due to the new test pipes.

I got the test pipes with a Dinan Tune about four months ago at Europeanautosource. This was a great combo that made the car feel a lot more torquey. The car makes a deeper noise when shifting so that is normal. Sometimes it even sounds like a trombone. I don't think its a good idea to put test pipes on with no tune because the ECU is confused so to speak...so hopefully you can get a tune soon.

However, I reckon you should feel a bit of an increase. Removing the cats = less restriction = more power. Backpressure isn't an issue since your have an OEM Catback and you still have 2x 200CEL Secondary Cats also. However, I find that with most cars, it takes a bit to get used to the new mods. I went from: Stock -> Test Pipes & Stage 2 Tune -> Akra Evo & Stage 2 Tune I noticed that the car pulled harder after it seemed to "Adapt" a bit more after a tank or gas or so. |

Just got the alpine tune so we'll see after a couple hundred miles. I'll report back. It just seems strange that after the test pipes the temps are noticeably higher. I can actually see the oil temp gauge moving back and forth slightly.

Hey Joe, per Alex@alpine "when you remove the cats you actually lose a little bit of torque but pick up horsepower due to the fact that their is less back pressure (less torque) but it's also more free flowing (more HP)". He also mentioned that when the tuner tunes the car they account for this and tune it to get more low end torque and of course more HP. Overall with the exhaust and tune I'm going to assume you have freed up 25HP and a few Ft Lbs of torque. Obviously with the tune you will see a noticeable difference. One should be having an issue keeping the tires from spinning in first gear.

Just an update on the Alpine tune. The car seems to have adapted nicely and pulls a little harder. Can notice the horsepower increase, nothing too crazy but decent. overall, worth the price of the tune and the sound is better. Dont expect crazy performance from a cat delete and tune though, just a little more power.

Any of the performance tuners (ESS, etc) can provide a flash cable/tune which show actual gains on the dyno.

Hi Tom, feel free to send me over your tune and I will do a completely honest comparison to validate your comment. Would be nice to be entirely sure.

Unfortunately that doesn't do a thing to confirm Alpine's tune as being a Japanese market stock tune. Any other information to support this claim?
