OP, I'm not sure what you're asking.
Are you simply trying to buy quieter exhaust parts to meet the legal noise requirements, or are you asking which types of exhaust systems will be quieter/legal? I think it goes without saying that stuff marketed as "race" will be extremely loud, so avoid that. Also, avoid systems that don't have resonators (or have very small ones) and/or don't use cat converters, as all of those will keep the noise levels in check. You can get a nice sound without going deaf or getting tickets. Remember, louder does not mean faster.

I read it that he's looking for an loaner exhaust to get through a fix it ticket inspection. Check you local M3 tuner shop, bet they have a stock setup laying around they can assist you with.
