Man, there was a pretty crazy thread on e46fanatics about a member who sent his M3 to HPF for a Stage 3 kit (I believe). Of course, the motor had to be fully built and the total cost was near 100k when everything was all said and done.

I'm not sure exactly what happened (mostly because I am pretty unfamiliar with FI tuning), but the owner sent his car to ProEFI to have a new engine management system made so he can use E85. Anyway, the engine blew after like 3k miles and the guys at HPF created a thread (the thread) with a couple of videos about their "diagnosis" of the car. From what I've gathered, they pretty much put the entire blame on ProEFI.

The owner was very cool about the whole thing, but had some pretty shocking things to say about Chris @ HPF. I've had my doubts about these guys, but I won't into any more details about that...

For those who are interested:

http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=908439

Edit - the one part that really bothered me (quote from the M3 owner):

Quote:
I also didn't like that you told me that "I ruined your weekend and you're out trying to enjoy drinks with friends"

I ruined your weekend? Do you think I'm over here doing the back stroke in a pool of happy sauce?
Seriously? A guy gives HPF 100k worth of work and he is treated with such little respect? What happens to the people who only spend 10k? 5k? Will they be completely brushed aside if problems arise?

watching the first video... that 5th piston has way too much play in it, along with it melting and the scaring of the block in the 5th piston cylinder. hah...

i could care less if he gives me 100k or a million. He took the car to a company (proEFI) to change the tuning and change it so it can run E85. All stuff that HPF has NOT fully released to the public. I think they're still working on the tune for E85 with the AEM EMS.

True, I know proEFI has had a great history in tuning for drag racers such as myself. but how much experience do they have with E85 or an HPF M3?

i'm kinda curious if he did any type of cool downs after spirited driving?

another thing that comes to mind... this looks like Ian's old car from Long Beach... if it is, i understand why it blew. Ian had the car serviced one week prior to the kid buying the car. Apparently about 2 months later he blew the car and sent it off to HPF to get built. Not a surprise he blew it again if it is the same guy hahaha

I agree, but HPF and ProEFI work together, no? HPF endorses them. Rather than putting all the blame on ProEFI, wouldn't it make more sense to try to work things out in private? It seems like HPF doesn't care about burning bridges. That is what I take from the thread, at least.

But if what you said is true about the motor blowing right before this guy bought it, I wonder if he knows the history of the car....

When you build a car like this, problems are expected. That is why the owner isn't angry about the blown engine, I think. I think he is more angry about how HPF is handling the situation and from what I've read, I agree.

i never said the car blew before he bought the car... i said he blew it up right after he bought it. meaning of course he knows the history cause he's the one who caused it. with that said...

looking at it again, it's not the same car. This is Marcus from the Bay Area so i know who he is. another thing... this is a different proEFI than i knew of back in the day.

and as for proEFI and HPF being buddy buddy... i wouldn't know. don't have an E46, nor do i troll E46fanatics to read about their threads.

Sorry, I misread your post.

Anyway, it's a rotten situation no matter what angle you look at it from.

I'm taking the hardest class of my life right now and we just got back our midterms. I thought I did ok, but when I saw the average, I knew that I had done worse than everybody else. To my surprise, I actually did much better than I thought (above the average, too). I was pretty shocked.

It feels really rewarding to know that hard pays off. That is all.

Wow what a shit show. Really sucks for the owner. I didnt read the whole thread but there seems to be a lack of instrumentation for a car of this caliber, egt's, timing logs, useful knock detection, ect. Really turned off how petty and unprofessional the shops involved are acting, it reminds me of the childish behavior seen from vendors in the N54 tuning world

Screw a few people over and you lose face. A lot of these companies don't really think about the long term effects of their actions.

I've seen this car before in SB. What a great deal, too. I'm sure it has sold by now.
