As I have stated here before, people that think that everyone drives the most expensive car they can afford tend to be driving the most expensive car they can afford.

It does drive that much better and is a special car. Once again, stoplight to stoplight there are better, but if you want to take the family out to dinner and run with just about anybody on track the M is hard to beat.

I just drove a 2011 335i sedan loaner around this afternoon. It has nice, but I am sure glad I own an M3. The take-off felt fast, but... my impressions were:
  • The exhaust and engine noise are not even in the same league as the m3. The sound of the m3 is intoxicating. The sounds of the 335i were so-so. I could take it or leave it.
  • It was an automatic, and the paddle shifting made me feel like I didn't know how to drive. I am sure the DCT in the 335is is much better, but the 335i would be a manual or nothing for me.
  • Steering wheel in the m3 is much more to my liking too. The 335i steering wheel felt little and brittle.
  • Driving the 335i like I wanted, only gave me 18mpg, so nothing great over my avg 14mpg on the m3.
  • Turbo lag is boring now compared to NA.
  • After 5500 you can really feel the drop in power. On the m3, > 5500RPM is heaven!

I've been on BMW CCA drives where there was a 335i sedan modded/tuned and I couldn't keep up with it in the straight line. Not even close, but big whoop. I can buy a 2003 STI and mod/tune to do that for $20k.

I don't even think the 335 crowd would argue that a bone stock 335 is absolutely no comparison to an m3 in every single way. m3 as much torque, faster at all rpms and gears, handling etc etc.

It is the modded 335's which is the arguement that make the car more appealing to some. You cant argue with this because you either like the absolute grunt of a modded 335 snapping your neck or you prefer the linear smooth pull of the m3 that never "feels " fast. Different feelings and I can see why some like one or the other.

The real interesting thing will come when the m3 is a turbo. Obviously out of the box it will be much better than a stock 335 but HP should be easily matched by a 335 and there will be much less diffference to differeniate the m3 then there is now.

Atleast now it draws the crowd of folks who appreciate a NA engine and a V8 at that.

Next m3 with a TT I6 will not be something that will really pull buyers to the m3 for 20k more IMO. There will always be the badge hungry buyers but IMO they will lose buyers unless they go V6TT which would again give exclusivity to the m3.

I was in the middle of writing an opinion into this thread then I thought to myself why? we all drive BMW's Ultimate Driving Machines who cares if its a 335 M3 or 135i

M3 Drivers stop looking down at 335 drivers

and 3 series owners in general STOP LOOKING DOWN ON 1 series

Oh and know one gives a f*** how much money you make or have. Seriously how old are some of you that you need to write that over a forum? Does that make you feel better telling people what things you have acquired or how much money you have?

and BTW before I hear shit from both sides M3's and 335i's I bought a 135i bc
A it's smaller than an M3 and I live in Europe
B I thought it was a much better performer than the 335i at the time
C They didn't have a 1M when I bought mine and I refuse to pay a markup to obtain 1

Lets just all get along....jeesh

I had a 335 and the torque felt great at low revs but the engine was very uninspiring and boring IMO . The m3's engine is special and I for one will never get tired of it as I did with my tuned 335. As far as having instant power, there's nothing instant about turbo lag, though the 335 had very little, it was still there and noticeable. You want instant power? The m3 has the fastest most instant power of almost any car out there.

^^^ Pretty much sums it up. I LOVED driving my 335i automatic for the last 4 years. Then my buddy at work gave me the key to his M3 for a quick romp 6 months ago.

I now have a M3 6MT and I don't reckon I'll miss the 335 that much. I can't believe both cars are the basic same chassis. The M3 is sooooooo much nicer a driving experience.
