225 square setup for winter - will it work?
I have a set of 4 Avant Garde 18x8 ET35's mounted with 225/40R snow tires. They came from an M235i that I recently sold. Could I use them on an E92 M3? Is 225 enough tire for the rear?
I realize I'll probably need spacers to make it look less terrible. Might also need to replace the TPMS sensors. Thx for any input! |

I don't see why not besides the aesthetics. Other things like offset, etc could affect you as well
I run 225/245 for winter. 225 for the rear is plenty of grip for wet/frozen surfaces as you'll be accelerating softly in the first place |

Make sure the load rating is sufficient. 225 tires aren't commonly used for a car that's 3700 pounds like the M3.

Why put a handicapped M3 through all of that?
Buy proper wheels/winter tires or buy a beater. When the roads are dry (which if it's anything like Toronto is 95% of the winter), it will drive and handle like crap. You may as well find a e46 beater and beat the crap out of that and park the M3. I enjoyed the 325ci I bought one winter and sold in the spring, didn't loose any money also. Gas savings from burning gas in the M3 you don't get to enjoy probably pays for the cost of the beater over the winter. Then the other winter I bought an e39 m5 that had some issues, fixed it up drove it for the winter and sold it for more later.

I ran 245/40R18 winter tires and it still handled like crap. Wider wheels and tires will not make a huge difference in dry traction on ice-cold pavement. Even if the roads are dry, they are often covered with salt, gravel, or other crap that will limit traction anyway. Are people really driving fast enough on public roads that they need ultra-wide sticky tires?

Agreed, and even the so-called "performance" winter snows barely handle any better than the regular ones. I have used Blizzak WS- and LM-series on my Audis and could never tell the difference. When in doubt, I would go for the winter tire that will maximize your foul-weather traction.

I've run 3-4 seasons with the Michelin Pilot PA4 and it performs great in the dry and is fine in snow, etc. I've survived some pretty impressive blizzards doing the NYC-Ottawa drive |

I've run a variety of winter tires on my cars over the years: WS60, WS70, LM22, LM25, and the X-Ice 2.

+1 PA4's are amazing tires. I have clearance problems before the tires hold me up...

225 is fine if you want to trade dry handling. I have run 215 before on our 4000 lb 535xit. Just check the load rating. I run 255/40/18 and 235/40/18 on stock staggered 18s in winter and get by OK in NH. Run a couple of sets of Dunlop Wintersport M3, but I would be open to trying another tire.
