4500 RPM Redline

Both E92 M3's I've owned (one with DCT and one with 6MT) have had their redlines at cold set to 6500 rpms. This seems consistent with the forums as well.

Considering trading my '11 in for a new one, I test drove a 2013 CPO E92 M3 with DCT and when I started it up, I immediately noticed it was a 4500 rpm redline while cold. I thought to myself "hm that's weird, I could have sworn my redline is 6500 when cold"...but drove the car and eventually it warmed up to the 8300 and rev'ed all the way up there too when driving it hard.

I got back home and started searching the forums. Since the car was acting fine besides the 4500 rpm redline, the only thing I could find was that the car had been tuned and the cold start redline was changed to 4500. The tune specifically that I saw this on was the BPM tune. Wonder if Mike Benvo can chime in on this?

If this is true, I may second guess buying the car, as it defeats the whole purpose of the warranty (that BMW could easily void). Ideas? Thoughts?

Could just be coded and not tuned.

Yes!
Its that important to bring the engine and oil up to operating temp before hitting higher RPM.

my understanding is the "cold" redline cannot be changed via simple coding.

not via ncs expert anyways... maybe theres a inpa or tool32 option somewhere to change it... i had mine lowered to 4500 as well... and it was done when i got my bpmtune.

Car is 99% tuned. You can rev it and see if it reaches 8600. If it does then it is tuned.

It's prob tuned but I haven't seen one claim on the forums that they've had their warranty revoked. Case in point that it was "certified" without knowledge of the tune.

Correct me if wrong.

Exactly ! Same thing here with my BPM/Tune !
The cold start rpm limiter can be set , because Mike just asks the customer of what he wants , it's actualy a custom tune
Of course Mike-Benvo (BPM) advice is to set it at 4500 rpm , and that is the best thing to save our damn bearings .
Think we saw enough BF 5H1T even today I saw someone , and so it's great to have it set to 4500 rpm .

Thanks for the input...I figured the tune was the only possible option. I didn't rev to see if it reached 8600 while cold for obvious reasons...

I guess if they selling it with a warranty I'm going to have them put in writing that the car has been tuned and still maintains warranty. For legal purposes of course.

Probably tuned by us. They won't be able to detect it at the dealer level. Send me the VIN and I can give you the answer.

Mike at BPM coded my 1m3 to limit redline at 4500 until warmed up. I love it.

Mike coded my car this way, and it's awesome. I've managed to bounce off the 4500rpm limiter when cold -- surprisingly easy to do. I'm glad I have that extra bit of safety.
