So i was trying to work quick and be smart, so i used the air gun to remove my wheel locks along with the regular bolts ....


...and at the 3rd wheel, i shredded the key.

anyone have an idea of how to remove the locks now?

I dont want to wait till monday to order a new key.

& I have 20 inch rims and the bolts are some what deep in.

that or order a new key

This happened to me. Take it to the dealer, they will drill it out.

If you only messed up the key, I wouldn't damage the lock if you don't have to remove the wheel before you get a replacement. I don't have to tell you this now, but never install lug bolts/nuts with air tools, especially lock ones, which are obviously much more prone to damage if overtorqued. I never get an air tool close to my wheels, even to remove lug nuts/bolts, since the sudden torque messes them up too. Good luck.

It happened to me once with my Nismo wheel. Dealer tighten my wheel too much so wheel lock broke when they tried to take it off.

If your wheel lock is from reputable brands, it's whoever tighten your wheel last time's fault. It means that person tighten your wheel with too much torque.

Even if you order new key, it has good chance to break again (it happened to me). The best way is drill the lock off from the dealership (or any good tire shop), get a new set of wheel lock and make sure to tighten your wheel with 88 ft. tq.

thanks for all the responses, I will order a new key from MCGard on monday morning, and try manually this time. The last person who tightned it used the airgun as wheel bc he said hes had locks come loose, etc.

I guess you learn something new every day.

If it doesnt work, we'll shred it off.

Don't let said person touch your car again. Lug nuts should never be put on with an air gun. Put them on my hand and then tighten them with a torque wrench. I believe the BMW spec is around 85 ft/lbs.

That's what I had (McGard). Dealer ordered new key and that broke again since lock was too tight. So they ended up drilling. Good luck.

had them broken off, the new key broke as well. just gotta say one thing, mcgards quality is pure shit.

Basically, you're going through exactly what I had to go through.
Some idiot tighten too much > Broke key > order new key > broke again > Drill out.
Luckily, it was all dealership's fault so I didn't have to pay for anything and they provided a loaner. But it was def. hassle.

McGard keys are not strong but can't say it's their fault. I would say whoever put/tighten your wheels with air gun last time has to get all the blames.

Just drill out your lock then get a set of BMW ones (I got their high security ones and key construction seems a lot stronger than McGard).

Oh yeah, ill try that if this ever happens to me. Usually a threaded bolt works if you take a smaller socket and hammer it a lil bit, but as for wheel locks your method probably is better.

It's def mcgards fault. These are locks that go on wheels, go thru a lot of heat / water, etc. theyre def not built strong enough. Keys gotta be much stronger as well.

my oem ones are MCGard too. all of them are...
