sorry guys to disappoint you but there have been some mistakes in the test table. the real numbers are as quoted in the text:

0-100 4,8s
0-200 15,7s

also i am still not sure which tyres they used. in the written article they mention sports tyres, but the dimension 265/35 zr19 is not available for the pilot sport cup...there is only a 265/30 zr19

so either another fault in the stat section or they had the "normal" pilot sport 2 * bmw specification that is standard on the 19"

bmw m saying, 19" will have different tyres with better stick and overall performance than the ones on the 18"

they did not say the name and type so far but pointed out they are far away in terms of all day safety from the cup tyres the e46csl had...

not sure whether it is german spec only or on all 19" cars

(i saw the pictures from south africa with 19" and normal ps2)

hopefully more details to come later....

What is it about the cup tires that is unsafe?

Okay fill me in then. Because it sounds like you feel duped because BMW used sport brake pads for there press day and may have used special sport tires for this particular review. However, based on what I have read it looks likey the article is simply talking about the special tires that BMW had made specifically for the M3 (should be common knowledge). Either way, better pads and tires simply make a good car a litttle bit better.

I think Clarkson from Top Gear said it the best and funniest. Apparently the CSL tires are so race oriented that you actually had to sign a waver saying that you understood the dangers of driving with them in the rain or any less than ideal condition.

Before Mark's very helpful posts, I *was* concerned about a lack of integrity in supplying a car for testing that is not in a configuration available to paying customers. This would mean that the results of these tests are all suspect because the car tested is not the car you or I can buy. No one was saying that tires and brakes will make the M3 a "supercar". (By the way, do you really think that even with the pads and rubber the new M3 is a supercar?)

You say that "based on what I have read it looks likey the article is simply talking about the special tires that BMW had made specifically for the M3 (should be common knowledge)". I agree it was common knowledge that Michelin developed a special version of Pilot Sport 2 tires for the M3. But show me any source prior to Mark's posts in this thread that indicated that there will be a difference in actual *tire compound* used in the 18s versus the 19s. (Yes, there was some general talk recently of the 19s being the better handling setup, but nothing about tire compounds or "Cups". There was also rumor early on that the car was faster around the ring on 18s.) If this is all common knowledge and much ado about nothing, please show me any source that states that the standard 19s will in fact be "Michelin Pilot Sport Cup+" tires.

I can confirm what Mark says. The 19" will be on Cup+ tires in Europe. US cars will most likely get Michelin PS2, no matter if 18" or 19".

So at least it's a tire that's available as a factory option...

Best regards,south

Thanks for the confirmation, South. I was hoping there was a good explanation for the tire situation. I think it is perfectly acceptable for BMW to supply a test car equipped with top spec rubber, as long as it is available to customers as an option.

How bad are we talking about as far as wet performance on these tires? Is this like driving a car in the snow on your typical summer tire (which I can confirm is indeed scary and insane)?

Yes, GT3 and GT3RS are using Cup tires. Don't know how much difference the "+" means on M3's CUP+ tires.

Best regards, south

As far as I know, the PS Cup+, were (are) developed for (also) wet conditions.
This tyres have more rough profile.
