I-80 NY-CA time of year suggestion?
Since before I even got my M3 I wanted to drive it from NY to San Fran. on I-80. Drive down Route 1 and take a southern route back to NY. I finally have time to go but it's in November. My question is do you think that is a wise time of year to commit to driving a M3 on I-80 across the mountain ranges? Should I be worried about a snow storm coming into the mountains as I'm crossing over them? I wouldn't imagine the ///M is a great car to be driving through snow. Should I postpone the trip until next summer sometime? Or do you think beginning of November shouldn't be a problem?

You are done for the year. Besides, you don't want to drive 80. It is the most boring road in the country.
I-40 is a nice drive and won't be a problem for summer tires. 70 to 50 is the best in my mind but 70 through Colorado is a crap shoot this time of year. If you do it in the summer you can drive 94 along the northern route which is great through North Dakota/Montana/Idaho. If you insist on doing this in November, I highly recommend one of the southern routes. I tried to do 70 to 50 in my M3, in October a few years ago and had to divert south in Kansas due to snow in Colorado. October/November is a great time to drive highway one in California. The tourists have thinned out, and the weather is much warmer than during the summer.

Thanks for the suggestion. I know how I-70 can be I've driven that in CO on ski vacations. Not good in the snow. My original choice of I-80 is because it's the most direct route to San Francisco. I would love to take the northern route, but I know that's definitely out of the question right now, not just for weather but for distance. I was hoping to do a loop with I-40 on the way home so not to take the same route both directions. I might just have to wait until 2009 summer or early fall like September.
My other option is to take my friends brand new Audi A4 since it's AWD. But that wouldn't be as fun once I arrive at the coast of CA.
