Tech pulled out the bigger pieces and showed me (pic)

-Flywheel removed, replaced

-Transmission removed, seemed fine

-Engine most likely needs to be replaced, but BMWNA is pulling apart engine piece by piece

Update:

Thanks everyone for your concerns and comments, much appreciated.

My service advisor called me yesterday to update that the dealership is
waiting for a special tool from Germany to open up and inspect the bearings.

BMW NA called me today, to say they have escalated my vehicle claim
and are moving towards a direction to buy back my M3.

When I asked, how long it would take for me to get a check so I can
get moving into a new BMW asap... He replied, he is unsure of timing
and upper management will generally call me directly to either give
a full refund or BMW credit.

I'm really hoping for the full refund.

That's the update.
Will check in the next time I hear anything.

On a side note, it's been so so weird driving a 328
for over a month now after being used to driving a M3.
Can't wait to get this settled... Jesus.

Wow crazy story... Do you mind describing in detail what the "grinding was like? I am having THIS feeling with my car and you can see what I have done thus far. At this point I am just going to see if it gets worse, but if your description is the same as mine I may have to take it in again and see if they find the same stuff in my oil pan...

I'm pretty sure you're going to a new car after what they told you... Good luck!

Update:

Good news!

BMW repurchased my vehicle and included usage from 1,500 miles when I first brought the car in for engine noises. They are refunding my down payment and all monthly payments, minus usage for 1,500 miles.

So happy!!! Glad it turned out good

BMW is good in making you whole again, thats how they keep you as a customer. The best scenario would have been picking one on the lot with more options and telling them I'll take that instead.
Glad things worked out ok! it normally does with BMWUSA

So whatever happens to these cars that are bought back/lemoned? They sold off to auctions?

Wouldn't be surprised if they show up as a CPO somewhere (after getting repaired, of course)
