Are the dealers doing this software update at a customer's request?

I am looking for my SA to do this update by BMW but his response was that there needs to be an issue that would require an update, and since my car running is ok, my car does not need a software update.

Any input as to how you went about to have the dealer do the update will be greatly appreciated.
My truth was as follows:
1.) My idrive responsiveness is slow and once in a blue moon, freezes for a while and then resumes. It doesn't do it often and just happens.
2.) my Bluetooth takes a long time to connect to my iPhone. When I need to make a call, I have to sit and wait for connections.
3.) my door locks keeps locking and unlocking when I spray the car with water while washing it.
4.) it seems to run really rich, sometimes I smell more exhaust fumes than usual.

The end result was 231E.

Prior to this update, I made my case to another SA who claimed my car does not meet the criteria for an update based on its production date (BS). There was something about her that wax phony and she lied about my car being in the service area... little stuff... So I schedule a subsequent apt and got a good (in so many ways) SA.

Anyway, I bet you've experienced some of the aforementioned issues.

New: E89X-12-03-502

1.) Throttle response feels more linear and better.
2.) brakes seems to grab better
3.) exhaust on idle sounds deeper
4.) better gas mileage. I expected to be down a quarter plus some of a tank but was shocked to find it about an 1/8 less. I was really shocked because I did lots of city driving and hard launches.

That what I've noticed.

Thanks to the OP as I just updated my 2008 e90 6MT to 46.6. I've never had an update and the initial software was from 12/2007. I can feel more torque from 3-5k. The car definitely runs smoother which isn't all good since I love to back off the throttle to hear backfire and burbles. I can't get it to do this now. The dealer charged 1.5 hours of labor. So far I'm very happy with this mod. I will report back after a few hundred miles.

I also noticed the less burble when backing off the throttle. But the good news is I drove from Washington date to PA (final destination is NJ). My AA is a lot deeper and louder (it was three years old when I got the used AA). Those miles really made it more raw! It spits every time I let off the gas and even in 5th. It is ferocious sounding. Can't wait to drive tomorrow!

I went in to BMW stevens creek and asked about the update and my service advisor got his tech guy and he told me there is no such thing 213E...said it is always a 6 digit number and it is 2.44.xx.x or something like that he could not remember it all.

That is correct. The dealers won't know it that way.

Interesting. I would not expect that but these cars are so complicated these days that I guess BMW could have used some sort of techno-wizardry to increase the boost or line pressures or something.

My Brake Vacuum Sensor hose went out immediately after I loaded 231E. First drive limp mode, didn't get five miles. Had to put it back to stock & go to the dealer who originally thought it was the 140E software & updated it to 231E. That didn't work so they ran diagnostics to figure out the problem.

Absolutely not - I am 2008 e90 6MT with no nav/EDC. Please review my posts - the latest update has made a noticeable difference in performance consistent with others in this thread.

That seems like a coincidence to me. It was the hose that was the issue correct (you had a vacuum leak)? If that's the case, there's no way it (a hardware failure) was related to the software.

Vehicle Order/Equipment does not matter, the software is DME only.

If your dealer is unwilling to update, any autologic-equipped facility in your area would be happy to ID and update for you.

Could have been a coincidence - I believe it was the sensor w/i the hose that was bad. Kept building pressure. The same pressure you here building right after you start the car.

Just to be clear for people reading this thread, that problem would be unrelated to this software update.

That's just a simple pressure sensor that is reading the vacuum that the brake booster sees. It's not related to the ABS pump you hear building brake fluid pressure shortly after start up.

This is a very common issue, due to bad placement of the sensor, there is a TSB for this very issue.

Was a brake service performed? this is common by overfilling the reservoir, spilling brake fluid onto the sensor.

To clarify, this has nothing to do with 231E.

Yes, unrelated. The bad sensor made the ABS pump run almost constantly.

Good to know on the TSB...Brake service was done about 6 weeks prior.

Seems like the dealer is going to "update" my car (apr 2008 production) that as far as i know has never had an update. had to push for it and my service writer is the man.

will report back. i'm a little nervous because from what i know...often the original tunes are usually the most aggressive. not the other way around. the original mini couper S's with the sc's were like this. The second gen mini S (with turbo) were like this as well...and the maserati coupes from 2002/03 were known as being much faster from the factory than the 04/05/06 counterparts.

Rolling the dice...i've got a sensitive butt dyno...will let you know
