DIY: 6MT clutch stop mod
Hi Folks,
This is my first DIY so hopefully it's not too confusing. Disclaimer: Modify your car at your own risk. I have read up on a few of the clutch stop mod and they cost around $15-20 each so I decided to make my own with items from Home Depot and Lowe's. I have attached the pictures here. 1st pic: Bump stop/anti-skid pads. They come in package of 4. 2nd pic: Machine screw. #8 x 1 1/4. I have these laying around in the house and they have a relatively wide and flat head so it won't stick out pass the bump stop after you put it on. 3rd pic: Body panel grommets. They come in package of 2. You can find these at Lowe's or other hardware stores. 4th pic: Take out the pin from the body panel grommet and tap the grommet with the machine screw. Run the screw in and out a few times so that the grommet will have a working thread cut into it. 5th pic: Use a little double sided tape and attach 2 pieces of the anti-skid pads together back to back. 6th pic: This is what the clutch stop will be like in the final form. 7th pic: Summary of the actual parts that you will need. Before putting the clutch stop in, you can attach the screw through the anti-skid pads and losely attach it to the grommet. This way, you can just pop the entire piece in and screw it tight with a screw driver. Because of the grommet shape, the clutch stop should center itself when you tighten it down. I tried putting more washers in between the 2 anti-skid pads but the car wouldn't start so I have to take the extra washers out. YMMV obviously on this. You can also use a body panel press in plastic thingy instead of the screw and the grommet I used here. I just decided to do it this way because I feel it's more secured. If you have a friend that's close by, you can split this and the total cost is < $3. I feel the clutch travel is much better and I can shift smoother after this mod. I have put 8000 miles on my car with no ill effect so I figure it should be good enough to post up for other people. Hopefully this will be useful for someone and let me know if I can present this better. |

^ I would like to think mine is more solid cause at least there is a metal screw as the core and the bumpstop has metal backing. However, I never got the one off of ebay so I can't say for sure which one is more solid. I do a lot of home improvement stuff so I see/work with these parts all the time and I can't justify paying $20 (after shipping) for the ebay one when I can easily make my own for < 1/4 of the price. I know everybody's value is different but also I like to tinker and make my own stuff so that add some more satification to it. cheers.

dumb question... but i cant find the spot this is suppose to install on the e92 m3. I have full carpet where it went on my previous e46. Is there a good reference you can point me to?

Ditto. I've bought one a while ago and when I go to look behind, there's already a bolt there that's coming through the firewall from the engine side. I don't see where I can replace it?

Hmm, can you take a picture? The bump stop is not mounted on the firewall. There is an aluminum piece/brace thingy that the clutch is attached to. On the edge of that aluminum brace is where the bump stop is mounted. If you push the clutch pedal in with your hand, you should be able to see where it's hitting the stop.

Do we have to remove the plastic panel to access this? I cant see anything w the dust shield in place. Also I dont think my body can fold that way to get to it... lol

There is no panel to remove. But you will have to kinda flip yourself upside down and put your head in there to see. lol. Or you can ask a friend/buddy to help you press the pedal in while you feel the contact area from the pedal arm. Once you know where it is, you don't really need to see it to work on it actually. I will try to take a picture of the area later.

I tried searching and I didn't find an answer. Does any know if these can be installed in 2013 models (particularly the E92)?
I feel the friction point is short as it is and might be fine without it...but I have to sit a little close to the steering wheel for my taste (I'm short) just to press the clutch all the way down. |

I just did it last night in my 08 e93 m3. There is a tiny black rubber num to pull out right above the carpet you will see when you move the dust cover for the clutch pedal. Pull that out and replace w the new one.
Once you know where to find it only take a min. Id suggest taking a small flashlight w you to find it. |
