another short shifter thread

hi guys, sorry to start a new thread. I have done a lot of searching and the concensus seem to be that the RE short shifter is the best for the M3 at the moment. However, from Mark's M3 thread, it seems that there is an OEM short shifter that work for the M3 also and probably will not have the same NVH issues.

I was wondering if any one out there know the part numbers for this OEM short shifter that works on the M3. I PM'ed Mark already but unfortunately, he is not sure either. I tried to cross reference the parts and ssk between the different 3 series but cannot confirm which one it is either.

Appreciate any input.

There is no OEM shortshifter available for order to the best of my knowledge. I would guess that the custom BMW short shifter that some have ordered as part of the bmw individual program is simply shorter in height, but I don't know that for a fact.

thanks for the reply guys. When I checked with Mark, he mentioned that it's something from bmw's part bin but he is not sure which one.

So far the info that I have gathered are:

- BMW has at least 3 short shifter kits today for their 3 series. One for the E46, one for the 328, and one for the 330i.
- the white plastic bearing clip is the same on all the E9x series short shifter and stock so the dimension of the ball in all the shifters are the same.
- the short shifter for the 330i comes with the shift arm assembly also and apparently works on the 335i based on people's reply on E90post.

My understanding is that the M3 has the same transmission as the 335i minus the oil cooler so my best guess is that the ssk for the 330i would work on the M3. I was wondering if any one has access to these different short shifters and know the dimension and the linkage, also if the tranmission on the M3 is mounted at the same location as the 335i?

Please correct me if I make any mistakes and thanks for any input.

sorry, but that's wrong.

BMW has a speciall SSK for the 335i, which include the lever and the shifting arm.

PM Scott@BMWHN. He is the parts manager at BMW of Houston, and he's been very helpful in the past when I was on the hunt for an obscure part number. He should know.

Edit: This is the OEM short shift kit for non-M E9X 6-speeds:

This may be the part that Mark had installed on his car, but I'm not sure.

^^Robmaster, thanks for the correction. I guess I got the designation mixed up but I do know the one that works for the 335i has the shifting arm also.

^aajami , I will check with Scott to see if he can help.

My best guess is that the one for the 335i would work in our car.

Thanks for the input.

From my research i've deduced that the difference between the 335i manual and M3 manual lies in the actual gearboxes location in relation to the shifter. If this is in fact the case then the BMW Perf. 335i short shifter kit will not work (the shift lever itself my work but it cannot be purchased seperately). Besides if it did work BMW would probably market it as such.

Which brings me to the e90 330i BMW Performance shift lever, I recall a DIY floating around here of someone installing it in a 335i but i cannot seem to find it. This may be what your looking for but i have yet to see a install attempt on a M3.

The part # for the BMW Performance 330i Shift lever: 25-11-0-434-219

Any updates on this? Has anyone been able to fit an OEM short shift kit to the M3?
