run flat tire opinions

I've seen a few random posts on this forum from members who dislike run flat tires.

My current car has run flat tires - all of my previous vehicles didn't have these.

The pros of run flat tires are that they protect the wheel if the tire gets a sudden flat, if I get a flat I can just drive the car to the nearest dealership, seems like it's safer - seems like there's less chance for the tire to become completely destroyed. Another pro - maybe roadside assistance insurance can be cancelled since you don't have to worry about flat tires?

The cons (just guessing) - slightly heavier? More expensive?

What are your thoughts on the pros and cons of runflat tires?

run flats are much heavier which was a concern for me.

it's the main reason why every time I get a chance I buy non RF tires

Pros of runflats are just as you described: safer in the event of sudden pressure loss, ability to keep moving if you have a flat in unfriendly territory, overall weight savings vs. keeping a spare in the car.

Cons: harder ride (beginning to get better with newer runflats), higher unsprung weight, they always need to be replaced if damaged (almost no shop will repair a runflat due to liability concerns), more expensive tires and fewer choices.

Just in case you do finally end up buying an M3, they don't come with run flats or a spare tire. If you want a spare for your M3, you have to piece it together. This thread tells you what is needed for a compact spare that will work: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...ht=space+saver

Runflat tires also have quicker turn in due to their stiff sidewall.
