I placed the order for a 2011 M3 2 days ago...sans the comp pkg...sans EDC...for the exact reasons that Clarkson stated. I just don't see the value in it.

At least the E46 ZCP had slightly better brakes and a faster rack.

So to recap, Amber Heard is hot as schit. Oh, and the M3 is pretty good, too...

I think that ZCP has been talked up too much but I also think Clarkson is misrepresenting the difference between a comp pack car and any other M3. I'm going to rewatch the other two E9x episodes to see if errr had EDC. Both had 220M 19's I know, so the cost margin has the potential to be a lot less.

There must be a way to dial out some of that RS5 understeer. Perhaps another setting on the ADS?

You could hear the tires just sliding when it was understeering. It's that awful understeer sound. I'm quite surprised and disappointed that even with the Sport Rear Differential it understeered that badly.

As for the ZCP, IMO in the US it makes sense if you're buying an M3 today, as it's barely more than getting EDC and 19" wheels a la carte. But if you bought your M3 in 2010 and don't have it, you're not going to be kicking yourself for not having waited another year. I ordered ZCP on my upcoming order, simply because I like the wheels it comes with (and why not take 10mm drop when it's available), and no other reason than that.

What was the spoiler? Hasn't the M3 beaten the RS5 every time they've been compared? Man I wish I could use the "beating a dead horse smiley" from my phone.

Don't forget the Audi's have the engine hanging way out there in front of the front wheels and the weight distribution is not 50/50.

Not on the newer B8 A4/A5 chassis. It's still weight biased towards the front, but the engine is now located more over the front axle as opposed to being completely in front of it like on the B7 models.

Clarkson covered this in the episode.

I wonder about the new Stig. I assume the "race" between RS5 and M3 was just for the telly as surely any half competant racer would have lost Clarkson in pretty much anything (remember Clarksons attempts on the Nordschliefe).

Also the Stig seemed to be provoking considerable understeer in the Audi and had the back end of the M3 sliding around all over the place (I accept that the track was damp) but seemed to me to be the wrong approach to fast laps. Great telly but perhaps not the fastest.

Am i missing something?

Clarkson says in the review that the competition pack cost £3300! That's $5300 US. In the US the competition package only costs $2500. Much more reasonable if your buying it in the States. Am I missing something?

On another, lighthearted, note.....

Clarkson says anything negative - "Ah well you cant take Top Gear seriously".

Clarkson says anything positive - "Well that proves it"

lol

England:
19's £1295
EDC £1295

Comp £3300

USA
19's $1000
EDC $1000
ZCP $2500

Canada
19's $2000
EDC $2000
Comp $5700

What you are missing is the affordability of options on a USA M3.

Too bad the track was wet, definitely slowed both cars down quite a bit.

That is very nice - I wouldn't buy zcp for $5300, but I sure would for $2500.

Lower suspension
I personally like the sport setting

I'd do it again tomorrow.

I often choke on the prices they quote in the show, which are quite often the same number in pounds sterling and dollars. The Brits pay twice as much for ZCP, which would be hard to justify anyway. Not sure I could justify that expense either.

Still I have no regrets.

PS - Top Gear is fun but can you take them very seriously? It's entertainment more than research. My sense is that the Bimmer Mag review is probably more about facts and less about clever one-liners. http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=491548

I loved the fact that the M3 beat the RS5, the Clarkson's review of the ZCP M3 was a bit too, well... Clarkson.

Also surprising was the price of the ZCP in England. IIRC Clarkson said it was over 3,000 pounds, much more than the $2,500 here. Does Value Added Tax add that much?
