DXO 8 vs 7

Anyone bought DXO 8 that had 7? Worth the cash?

Sorry, but I missed the question when it came up.

For me, speed and quality of output has not changed a lot, EXCEPT that there are now sliders for Shadow/Black/Highlights/Midtones which I use quiet a bit, mostly to bring up shadow detail. I used to have to convert to a tiff and take the image into Sagelight if I wanted to bring up shadow. Now, most of the time, I do it in DxO.

That made it worthwhile for me.

There was an offer on to upgrade but it's expired now - I'll live with 7 I think.

There's loads of 'em on here - I don't have a MAC. Don't know if there are any speed differences on PC

Awesome!

Yes, the speed different was noticeable on my Mac...hoping to upgrade the Mac in 2015 (still a year away!) to something with SSD, which is really what seems to take a lot of time for the program to load up pictures...

The pictures upload fast from a SS HD when they've already been transfered to the drive. If reading directly from a CF or SD card, you want a USB-3 reader. USB-2 is slow, slow, slow and just not suitable for any imaging done with large Raw files, like my 25MB Raw files and/or 100+MB tiff files.

For both DOP 7 and 8, for fastest operation you need 8GB or RAM, a reasonably fast processor and a reasonably fast Graphics card with OpenCL enabled. The OpenCL thing is very important, because there's code to make use of both the G-card and the CPU for faster processing. Both DOP 7 and 8 are 64-bit, so operating in a 32-bit environment is not going to be good, if it works at all.

As a benchmark, my 64-bit, Win7, Lenova with 8GB of Ram and a SSD and medium level graphics card is processing 25-30MB Raw files in 4 to 8-sec. DOP 8 and achieved that with DOP 7 also.

I'm running an Intel I7 3770k @ 4549MHz - 16GB RAM - 3 monitors wide - GTX 670 (4gb) - Win7 Pro 64bit so probably wouldn't notice much I guess. I transfer the pics to PC via USB3

I think you're right Paul. If you're on DOP 7, then you'll only gain the sliders for: Shade, Highlights, Midtones and Blacks. That was enough for me and I use at least one of these sliders on over half my shots. YMMV

BTW, what are your processing times averaging now? I would be amazed if they're not well below 10-sec.

My raw's average around 18MB - just resampled and converted some to 800 pixels. It did 18 in a minute. 31 in two minutes, 65 in 4 minutes - This is with it set to process 2 at a time. I'm not sure if that's the best way? I may try doing a few more at a time - see if any difference.

That's under 4-sec. each, which is way faster than v. 6.
