Is iPod Supposed to Charge

I have the 6FL (ipod) option on my 2010 M3 Coupe. When I use the hookup adapter (y cable) with my iPod Nano, I don't see that it's charging the iPod.

Isn't it supposed to?

My October 28, 2009 built car came with the iPod cable #61120440796.

Just an update. I just noticed that even when using the 796 BMW iPod cable that came with my car, the iPod is charging. It's just that the charging icon with the lightning bolt on the iPod is so small, it was hard to see.

Now I don't have one, but I wonder if the latest iPhone would get charged?

Not sure this helps, but I had to buy a little adapter at the apple store ($20) for my ipod hookup - mine is the one in the glove box (2008 model). It charges great now, before it would only play..

The old cables were still using firewire charging (+12V), current iPod models require USB (+5V) charging requirements.

There is an updated cable from BMW that will have the correct charging method.

You have an 08 with USB in the glovebox? Installed after delivery? I thought you could only get that on 09 and later from the factory.

My Jun-'08 build (at the end of the '08 MY run) only has it inside the center console too. Maybe an Euro spec car??

And how do you know if the 'Y' iPod cable is the 'updated' one? I don't have an iPod, but my USB drive works fine.

The current cable looks to be 61 12 0 440 812, it appears to supersede 61 12 0 44 0796 according to the parts system. I have one right in front of me, I just picked up my 2010 M3 yesterday.

Did your car come with the 812 cable? If so, if you have an iPod or iPhone, let us know if it charges the device.

If it does, then I will ask my dealer to exchange the 796 cable for the 812.

6FL-equipped M3s do not come standard with the cable, but most dealers will include them if asked when your vehicle is picked up.

I doubt dealers will be exchanging or providing replacements, but feel free to try.

My car came with the 812 cable. My previous two other BMWs with 6FL also came with their respective current cables.

I have an original iPod Nano so I won't rely on that as the test. I'll use my iPhone 3Gs and see what happens. I actually have 6NF, Smartphone Integration, and the adapter cradle (the latest) for the iPhone 3G/3Gs so I will be using that normally. I'll see if I can try the iPhone tomorrow with the cable, sorry, it's not yet a daily driver.

Yup, Scosche is the one I bought. Works great for my newer model nano.

I have the opposite problem (I think). I have an OLD iPod, (iPod Photo) that is firewire. It doesn't charge in my '09. (Center console charging with Y cable.) Is there an adapter to help me? (Or do I need a new iPod)?

The BMW iPod kit and 6FL will only work with 4G and later iPods. 3G (firewire) are not compatible.

I made a correction to my original post above. The 6FL option is charging my 3rd generation iPod Nano. It's just that the battery icon is so small that is was very hard to see that the lightning bolt was on the battery icon.

I'm referring to the full-sized 3G iPod, with the 4 buttons above the scroll wheel (before Clickwheels).

My original iPod Nano seems to work in my wife's 2009 128i (w/6FL). Still haven't tried it in my M3 but I'm more interested in trying my iPhone 3Gs as an iPod via the snap-in cradle. What's keeping me? Work.

I think we're confusing the generations a bit. All iPod nanos are compatible, the 4G is in reference to the full sized iPod only.

Essentially, any iPod purchased before 2004 is not compatible with the BMW iPod kits. This also includes all shuffle models. iPods switched from firewire charging to USB charging (which is what the previous 6FL cables are failing to support) starting on Classic iPod models, then 4G nanos then iPhone 3G/Touch models afterwards.

An iPod generation chart can be seen here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353

If you still have a 3G iPod, the battery is probably shot by now, unless replaced.

I thought it was only the 1G iPod that had the buttons above the click wheel.

FWIW, my ipod video, iPod Touch, and my iPhone all charge in my car. No messages about "charging not supported" or anything.
