My shifter's really short, like 2 inches between up and down gears, and it really just clicks into the gear. Really precise, really accurate... I feel like it'd be damn near impossible to misshift w/ this transmission.






My 6MT is a DCT.

Yeah I've driven MT my whole life and I don't see the problem with this gearbox.

I would to shorten my throw but don't really want to put in a short shifter as my college roommate screwed his transmission up with one on his E46.

I had an s2k as well and it really is a great shifter feel but so is a vette w/ shifter and mustang/ viper w/ shifters.. The thing everyone doesn't realize is that in all of those cars the shifter goes right into the trans. The m3 shifter utilizes a linkage w/ bushings that def feel a little soft. Changing the carrier busings alone to something harder (delrin) def make a big improvement, but the trans will never feel "mechanical". I have tried a UUC shifter w/ all new bushings from BMW and it still didn't feel great. It was good, just not great. The best shifter I have felt is the Autosolutions for the e46 m3. Too bad we can't get them to make something for this car. I will say, w/ the performance knob alone, my car feels amazing. I have driven stick cars for my whole life (over 25 diff cars, all stick) and although a little notchy, it does feel good. There are diff ways to hold your hand on the knob that will also facilitate smoother gear changes and YMMV.

Isn't the DCT a 7 speed?

My '07 Si used to pop out of third gear all the time. Common problem on those cars. I've never had shifting problems in any of my 6 BMWs. I've driven better feeling MT's, but to me, perhaps because I'm so used to the feel, I always like BMW MT's. They respond best to smooth inputs.

I would say the transmission feels slightly vague and somewhat notchy.

Having said that, I don't find any issue in finding gears up or down the box.

I have an aftermarket clutch stop, which takes up a bit of lost motion in the travel. I recommend getting one.

My 350Z had a crap transmission. I was looking forward to having a newer, nicer car with a good transmission. I didn't get with the M3. It clunks going into 1st, doesn't want to go into first. The 1-2 shift is notchy. It's even notchy going into 3rd sometimes. The clutch engagement is vague. It feels like shit.

That said, changing the trans fluid (did it this weekend at 53K) helped a lot. Lifetime fluid my ass. It feels a lot better. It didn't prevent a 1-2 misshift that caused me to grind the shit out of 2nd. FML.

This really isn't about adapting as a driver though. It's about the transmission as it's own unit, and I hate to say it, but in comparison to other car's I've driven the M3's falls short.

The NSX's transmission is on a totally different level. If I could it bolt up, my OEM transmission would be lying on the side of the road. To have any idea of what I'm talking about, you have to at least experience, driving the car. It won't take long.
The M's transmission is by no means great, it's just functional... it works, and IMO for the price we're paying for these cars, I think it should be of a higher caliber then that. If you're just Sunday driving, day in and day out, you'll never notice an issue. It is not pretty though when you're trying to put the car through it's paces and you're not familiar with it's flaws. That false sense of engagement that 2nd gear can give can bite you in the ass real quick.

There's worse out there though. Personally I hate the R8's shifter, but that might be a little biased, I've never liked the idea of gated shifters to begin with.

The minor tweaks we can do to our shifter does help though, I personally look forward to seeing how things go with ZHP knob. I'd have to agree with the masses though, in saying that our transmission would fall in the middle of the pack.

I have similar feeling like the OP stated.

Used to drive EP3 Civic 6MT, but was pretty worn out car.
then years later got this M3 6MT, and it does feel HARD and NOTCHY.

Didn't have a chance to drive other MTs extensively, until recently had a chance to drive MK6 GTI for a full week.

Simply put, GTI MT was SO smooth, So easy, SO forgiving. For example, it is SO easy to do NYC city driving, SO easy to k turn wherever compared to the M3.
Clutch is light, engagement point "range" is, from my experience, much more forgiving and longer than that of the M3.

My M3 does feel notchy 1-2 gear, and does demand quite a bit of FORCE when getting into each gear. M3 Clutch is deeper,longer.
GTI, you can literally shift with your pinky. Literally.

Difference is, BMW shifts are freaking TIGHT, they WILL stay in gear once it is in. You cannot wobble around the shifter both in gear or in neutral.

GTI manual, while being smooth, is SO LOOSE, it feels like it will pop out so easily, and it wobbles a lot, like the car has 500K miles on the tranny (this GTI was under 6K new car).

With that said, this is why M3 tranny is versatile and useful when driving harsh on track, on the other hand GTI is so easy to drive around town, yet is doubtful when driving hard.

In the end, I want to get a SSK or tranny fluid change to really avoid this cranky, notchy 1-2 gear feel (sometimes I feel like I'm grinding into another metal hard when shifting to second gear), i dunno how much the modification will make the difference

Recently had a chance to drive the new 2013 M5 MT. This clutch is the hardest to drive on, I dunno this is a new M5 thing or just because it is so new, but the clutch has HARD AXX Spring, it just POPS out even with the most sensitive left foot release. was quite difficult to even get into gears.

Not the best manual I've ever driven nor the worst. I've been driving manual for over 20 years and this manual is above the midway point of my favorites. How far I won't say. It would be top 3 if I could only feel the clutch engagement point. I've gotten quite used to that though. Never have I experienced any notchiness or anything but smooth shifts into defined gates. The shifter itself is not a problem for me. One thing I greatly appreciate about THIS manual is even though the clutch has no feel, it seems indestructible and should easily last over 150k plus miles in proper hands IMO.

There are two completely different driving situations.... casual and aggressive. Casually driving, not a single problem, its all about your timing and driving that makes it most smooth. When aggressive, it can have its issues especially from 1-2. Hate that crappy grind.

I too have experienced the clunky 1-2 shift and i quickly realized this car likes to be shifted at higher RPMs. Try the 1-2 shift at 4k -5k and the clunkiness goes away. Same with the 2-3 shift.

stock is certainly clunky, and throws are longer than needed, but add a ssk and it's just right IMHO. I have a UUC SSK, the BMW Perf. Knob, and it's the perfect little set-up for me - no complaints.

Honestly, the O2M transmission is the best transmission I have ever driven. I loved my 20AE GTi, but someone decided to total it for me by not stopping at a red light.
