I have just picked up the VRS bootlid and am actively looking for a reputable place to paint. I am getting different stories from each body shop I talk to.

Have others who have installed the bootlid had to have the body shop colorsand and blend the rear quarter panels as well? What about primer before paint? Is that necessary?

Any recommendations for solid autobody/paint work in SoCal?

TIA

You definitely don't need to color sand or prim the rear quarters. Your body shop should be able to match the paint fade on the new bootlid without that kind of work. Regardless, your car is less than a month old, I'd be surprised and appalled if there was any sort of paint fade- that's what clearcoat and waxing does

as Nick@Jlevi SW said you shouldnt have to blend the quarterpanels. A good shop will take the time to color match the paint. A great shop will take teh time to consider the color difference between a painted carbonfiber part and metal.

not many know but painting plastic and carbon fiber result in different color in comparision to metal. You can probably see it on your car already take a good look at your bumpers and the fenders/hood or quarterpanels. they probably dont match 100% as it is.

as for primer? yes and no. yuo can use primer but when I have mine done I will use a clear coat as a primer so that I can fade from CF to white and have less lines exposed. If you are painting the entire boot lid then primer is fine. You need to primer with something before paint or you will have pealing issues and boubles in the paint from the poors CF parts usally have.

Thanks for the great info guys.

I have left the bootlid off at a shop to be completed by next mid-week. The lid will be primered and painted with a water-based paint, it is the first time a fade will be performed by this shop with the water-base, so I'm anxious to see how it's going to turn out.

I'll post a pic when it's completed.

These have been asked several times, but not answered:

1. How much does the steel lid weigh?
2. How much does the CF lid weigh?
3. How much does the CF lid cost?

Do you really want to spend $2000 for 5 lbs of weight savings for instance? That would be $400/lbs, which would be insane in my book. How much weight does removing the rear floor mats save and how much does that cost? I am interested in reducing as much weight as possible in my car as well, but not at an insane cost.

lucid: I will be posting answers to all of the above this week. I am waiting to get the stock trunklid back so I can weigh it separately w/o the carpet and other hardware to compare them "apples to apples" It is significant, the CF trunk is extremely light. I'll post exact specs on my thread later. As far as cost it retails for less than $2k, I received a "sponsorship price" which will be a little less than retail.

Side Note: Does anyone know a link to a thread that show examples of the "blended color" photos of the VRS bootlid?

Didn't hear back from Vorsteiner yet, they need to hold 3 bootlids for measuring the differences which can be tough as we are trying to get them to customers asap.

Who else is counting down to Bimmerfest next weekend?
