Throwout bearing?

I recently just purchased my e92 m3 and have since noticed that the 6sp manual transmission is realitively loud. Not only when shifting gears at a low speed but also at a complete stop after parking. Sitting in the car with the transmission in nuetral i can hear the ever-so-faint sound of what seems to be like a worn out bearing. When i press the clutch in, the noise stops, and returns when i rengage the clutch. Again, it is very hard to hear (best heard in a garage with the stereo completely off)

Maybe im just being picky over the new car (...well used but less than 28k miles on it) but this noise worries me. Anybody else notice a noise like this? Or is it normal? I didn't want to take it to the dealer and waste time untill i know for a fact somethings wrong.

I think the chatter from the throwout bearing is not an "issue". You'll get this from most high performance transmissions. You think this is loud, you haven't heard my old Evo's TO bearing chatter.

I'm sure others will weigh in on this, but I think with all 6MT high performance transmissions, it'll chatter to an extent. It shouldn't be so loud where it's unbareable...

That's normal throwout bearing sound IMO. My 350z always had a similar sound but much louder and it was always considered normal.

Think of it as a hovering helicopter just overhead. That will take your mind off it.....

My 09 never exhibited this, but my 11 does. Its mildly annoying, but that's what warranties are for should it ever materialize into something worse.

Well that puts my mind to ease, thanks guys.

Although I hope im not confusing you guys with the "chatter" that the tranny makes at low speeds when pushing in the clutch to coast (1st gear only usually, when looking for parking spots etc.). That noise can be relatively loud, but my e46 m3 did this also and i realize that noise is normal. I believe its reffered to as flywheel chatter when i looked into it years ago.

The noise im reffering to is when the car is PARKED. Shifter in nuetral and clutch out. Press the clutch in and the noise immediately stops. Just sounds like the transmission is spinning with a somewhat worn out bearing. Again, its pretty quiet, but i never noticed a transmission to make noise at an idle. Oddly enough, it only does it after the cars warmed up.

normal for 6MTs, mine's new and has had that since day 1 (5 miles on it on day one). so, enjoy........quite a bit of manuals that I have had make that noise.....like you said, at idle and pressing the clutch in makes it go away.....

The parked noise is from the throw-out bearing. Normal.

High performance cars tend to make noises that can be disconcerting at first. In order to increase performance, you must often sacrifice isolation from the mechanical operation of the car.

I can't think of a manual trans that I've ever owned that doesn't make this noise.
