And since not even BMW knows, the debate will go on forever!

Look outside BMW to find the answer. Public records!

FACT:
BMW registered the BMW roundel logo in October of 1917.

The first BMW aero-engine test took place in March 1918 –six months after the BMW logo had been created & registered.

The propeller used for the engine wasn't manufactured by BMW.

+1

That was really lame. Why make the effort to pose a shot like that and then not do it well? Makes one wonder about factory quality control, too.

I'm sure building hundreds of cars a day that it doesn't get fitted so slow and awkward like that. Probably gets done by a big yellow robot

For years it was the propeller, but it is certainly the Bavarian Flag.

The vid showed pretty clearly that the logo existed long before the association with aircraft.

I hate to bring up an old thread - but to keep up the debate - I received a little promotional package from BMW today (I just bought a 2011 about a month ago). Anyway, on one of the pages of the 'history' book, it says:

"One of the most recognizable logos in the world, the blue and white BMW insignia is known as a roundel. It's the only automotive emblem to depict motion as it portrays the movement of an airplane propeller against a clear blue Bavarian sky. This hearkens back to BMW's early days as a manufacturer of airplane engines that set many altitude records in the early 1900s."

Interesting.
