The S5 MSRP was lower than I expected. I was assuming 55k. Will see how high it can get with options.

Still a little overpriced IMO.

Audi options are fewer and generally less expensive than BMW/MB options. I'd imagine a similarly specced version of my 52k MSRP 3er would probably come out to around 55k

+1 I was expecting more as well. But I think its not a bad starting price for the S5. I dont care about the A5.

IMO, ~$2k is a small premium to pay for the added style, interior, and V8 sound.

Where the S5 will get expensive is options. Outside the B&O stereo, everything requires Nav so a fully optioned S5 will run around $58k and the difference grows closer to $3-$4k vs. an equally equipped 335i.

For me, B&O is the only option I'm interested in so the S5 makes a heck of a lot of sense vs. the 335xi I like at $49k.

How did you get 3-4k difference only? My car is fully loaded for 48k. The Auto S5 will start at 52k.

You can't compare only with the 335xi because AWD is not always an advantage and since the S5 doesn't come RWD...oh well...
And most of the test will compare it the the RWD 335 because that is the 3 series benchmark, not the XI.

$9,700 premium to get a stock S5 over a stock e92 335i? If I had the money then it'd be a pretty tough choice, cuz unless your going for every last ounce of performance when it comes to mods, I think it's not that bad of a deal. Sure, it's heavier and less nimble in the twisties, but that's the trade-off they made for a hellanice interior and the use of Quattro AWD. Well, I don't necessarily need the AWD (I'm in FL) unless I want to go unnecessarily fast in the rain, but it'd be nice to have that interior and that extra bit of exclusivity.

PRESS RELEASE

05 September 2007
AUDI ANNOUNCES U.S. PRICING FOR 2008 A5 AND S5 MODELS

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Audi of America, Inc. today announced pricing for the all-new 2008 A5 and S5 coupes. A5 models with a six-speed manual transmission will start at $39,900 and S5 models with a six-speed manual start at $50,500. Both the A5 and S5 have asymmetric quattro® all-wheel drive standard. Destination charges are $775 for both models, and are not included in the base price. Six-speed Tiptronic® automatic transmissions are available for both models and are a $1,300 option.

Manual transmission S5 models will arrive at dealers in November 2007. All A5 models and Tiptronic S5 cars will be available in spring of 2008.

The 2008 A5 is powered by 3.2 FSI V6 engine with the new Audi Valvelift System, and produces 265 hp at 6500 rpm and 243 ft.-lbs. of torque between 3250-5000 rpm. The S5 has a 4.2 FSI V8 engine making 354 hp at 6800 rpm and 325 ft.-lbs. of torque at 3500 rpm. Both engines give the new coupe breath-taking acceleration. The A5 takes just 5.8 seconds from 0-60 mph, while the S5 is an even faster 4.9 seconds.

All coupe models will come with numerous luxury features as standard such as leather covered power front seats, three-zone automatic climate control, in-dash six-CD changer and Sirius® satellite radio, electromechanical parking brake, driver info display, rain and light sensor for automatic lights and wipers, and a leather-covered, multi-function tilt and telescoping three spoke steering wheel. A5 models come with 18-inch alloy wheels while S5 models have 19-inch alloy wheels with performance tires.

The A5 has a comprehensive list of options that enhance the model in styling, comfort, and sportiness. A $1,850 Convenience package includes bi-xenon headlamps, heated front seats, HomeLink®, driver seat and mirror memory, heated, auto-dimming, and power folding exterior mirrors, and auto-dimming interior mirror with compass. For drivers who value performance, there is the $2,900 S line Sport package consisting of more aggressive front and rear bumpers with headlight washers, sport suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels with performance tires, sport seats, brushed aluminum interior trim, black headliner, and S line interior and exterior badging.

Options that are available on both the A5 and S5 include Audi Navigation system ($2,390), 505-watt Bang & Olufsen® audio system ($850), and Audi side assist ($500). Both models also have an available $1,700 Technology package that includes Audi rear parking system with rear-view camera, adaptive headlights, and Advanced key.
I think the S5 is worth the price since i personally think it looks better inside and out compared to the 335i. BUT, thats still a lot of money for me.

That was Edmunds. No idea why they quoted $6,300 other than lack of research (or they simply copied and pasted from an A8 review). Even though US pricing wasn't available when they wrote that review, by UK pricing the most it could've been was $1k.

Yes, BUT it's only a ~$4k premium over a 335i with Auto, ZSP & ZPP like yours (both of those packages are standard on the S5). Where the S5 gets expensive is for Audi's CA equivalent you're required to get Navigation & the Tech package. That's a lot of $$ to get a ~$500 feature.

In case you're interested...here's a list of standard features on the S5 that are extra (most part of ZSP or ZPP) on the 335. One thing I like about the Audi is their iDrive computer equivalent is standard (like on the 5-series). Main difference is the controls are moved around the gearshift w/Nav vs. above the A/C w/o Nav.

* Servotronic steering
* S5 sport suspension
* Tire pressure monitoring system
* Bi-xenon headlamps w/ autoleveling and LED day time running lights
* Headlight washers
* Autodim, power, heated, folding, and exterior mirrors with memory
* S5 exterior differentiation - quad exhaust, bumpers, badging, grille, door sill trim
* 19" wheels with high performance tires
* Sirius satellite radio
* Alarm system with immobilizer
* Bluetooth® hands free cellular phone preparation
* 3-zone climate control
* Electromechanical parking brake
* Homelink garage door opener
* Memory for driver seat and mirrors
* Auto dim rear view mirror with compass
* Rain / light sensor with Coming Home / Leaving Home function
* 8-way power driver and passenger seat (with driver and passenger lumbar)
* S5 sport seats with Silk Nappa leather (heated front seats, rear folding seats)
* Ski bag

Do more research.

The options in bold are standard on the 335.

You're correct on most of those. However, you're doing some selective highlighting with the 8-way seats. The point is the S5 comes with heated, leather, lumbar seats as standard - 335i does not. As for the exterior differentiation, I list that because the S5 essentially has the equivalent of M-Sport as standard.

IMO, now that Audi has their RS line and BMW has moved the M3 up the product priceline, the S4/S5 is more comperable to the M-sport E90/E92.

I think we're all forgetting something here folks...

The 335i has already beat out the S5 in performance comparison tests....and we're talking stock for stock; never mind a PROcede 335i vs. an Audi S5.

Hey, the Audi S5's got the looks, the luxury, and the high-tech features (many of them std. or less costly to add than in the BMW 335i), but the BMW 335i's still got the edge on performance for less $$. If you're after a more refined, higher luxury look and style, go for the S5 for a few extra $$. If higher performance is a priority, stick with the BMW 335i...it's pretty simple.

Also, don't forget that for another $10k-$15k over the 335i, the E92 M3 is right there as well...which also completely blows away the S5

True 'bout the M3^^^. I'd take it over an S5 anyday...but if we're talking about the choice of a loaded 335i vs. a loaded S5...I'd trade some handling and edginess for some added luxury and looks.
