Here is the extended warranty quote I received...

My '08 E90 M3 factory warranty will be up soon so I thought I would shop around and see what extended warranty options I had. I called BMW and to extended it through them is was going to be about $5K.

After doing some research it seemed Mercury Insurance's Mechanical Breakdown Protection may be a good better value alternative. Called and got quotes from 3 different Mercury agents today and the lowest cost I could find was $4,500. Just wanted to post this in case others were looking for an extended warranty.

Attached is the quote I received.

$5K would be Gold coverage I believe. I paid $3.5K for the powertrain plus.

Is the Mercury mileage and years coverage from your date of coverage start or from original in-service date?

That seems a lot? The extended BMW warranty here is about £1k/annum for the top package which includes no deductible and breakdown cover.....

Doss your car have lots of miles, as the things they cover changes at 60k miles.

The person worried about warranty coverage is not going to increase the risk of problems by running 50% more power through the drivetrain.

It is 6 years/100K miles from the original in-service date. So an additional 2 years.

It doesn't take much to make it pay for itself. I just had my faulty amp replaced in my '09. 1300 for the amp and with the troubleshooting (even though I told them what the problem was) and recoding it would have been 2 grand if I still wasn't under warranty. I'm probably going to get the extended warranty when mine is up just because a couple little things like this can easily make it worth it, not to mention the risk of major problems. That's what I'm thinking anyway.

$5k is a lot. Obviously this doesn't cover the scheduled maintenance, does it? How much do those run? How much would it cost to fix the common failures on these cars that have mileage from 50k to 100k?

+1. I let the warranty expire on my E46 and spent nearly $4k in repairs in the final year that I had the car.

The term is from the purchase date of the coverage, per the quote. It even gives you the date of expiration. Also the mileage is upto mileage, not add on mileage.
