I'm glad someone found 'some use' for the R888's... because it sure ain't racing in the dry!
And yeah, I fall into the over 3,000lb cars... which like RA1's over triple 8's... rain or shine. Peace, Dave

I ran a combination of 275/35 18's in both Ra1's & R888s in both wet and dry conditions. The RA1's work great in the dry and seem to tolerate a fair bit of sliding around with out falling off like the 888's do.I ran with 888's on the front with peaked RA1's on the rear and this combo worked very well with reasonable balance with mild understeer & mild very controlable oversteer under power on corner exit.A much better setup than the 888's all round and quite enjoyable to drive and to be able to 15 laps in a row with good rear grip is a big plus!
They did not work so well in the wet and the shaved RA1's had more grip in the wet than the almost full thread 888's had.I put my PS2's on for the rest of the day and had some fun Last edited by Gearhead999s; 10-03-2009 at 04:29 PM.. |

Thanks for sharing Gearhead! And those findings are the same we experienced on our 3000+ cars...
The RA1 is by far a better tire in almost all accounts... so much so... that TOYO had to rescind it's plans to discontinue the RA1... and now... RA1 is back in FULL Production of ALL Sizes! The R888 I think will be the tire being discontinued... here shortly. Dave

Nope. Dunlops come in 225/50/16. Too tall. I hear they are great though...

Run the taller tires! Jk, I was gonna recommend the XS, AD08, RE-11 but I realized that they're all the same. I've heard the R1R is great on the dry but wet is a little scary. Either way, GL!

So, I did end up using the R1R in the rain on Sat. It was raining pretty hard--to the extent that there was standing water everywhere. At some point it really degenarated into driving to avoid the puddles. As to the tires, I forgot to scrub them before the event--could have done it at the Glen--so the very first session was very slippery. They did fine in the latter sessions. Of course, the cars that were on full rain tires had much more grip, but the R1R was OK overall. It is fine for how I want to use it.
The main event of the event for me was my water pump giving up. Started leaking coolant. Fortunately, I was able to locate a spare pump and a gasket, and replace it. I lucked out with the schedule, and missed only one session! It really helps when you have a bunch of club racers around--they are obviously better prepeared for that kind of thing.
