iPhone 3GS - Reception Problems

I got a 32 GB iPhone 3GS on launch day. I have recently noticed that I've got serious reception issues. First, people claim to have called me, yet my phone does not ring and I do not see any missed calls. Friends have claimed to leave voicemail, but it took almost two days to show up. Sometimes when somebody calls, they instantly get an AT&T voice recording saying that I cannot be reached at this time and to call back. The person immediately calls back and I am able to answer. I even got a text message 2 hours late.

Is AT&T's network experiencing problems or do I have a defective phone?

my brother just upgraded his 3G 16GB to 3.0 and has had numerous dropped calls. He took it back to the apple store, got the 2.2.1 firmware on it and is using that. No problems with the older FW.

I've read that some people blame the poor reception on the 3.0 software. Some blame it on the 3GS. And some blame it on AT&T's network. I guess we won't know until more time passes to investigate.

I blame it on the alcohol.

I had this problem with my 3G almost a year ago. Dropped calls and poor reception.... I will blame it partially on AT&T, as their coverage switches networks (i.e. 3G>EDGE>GSM>3G) CONSTANTLY, and it caused my BB's to hang frequently in the middle of large transfers. It's no secret that AT&T's coverage and actual practical network speed aren't up to par, but something about the iPhone was magnifying the issue.

So far, I haven't had a problem with my 3GS, but it's been less than 24 hours. The reception and dropped calls were why I got rid of my 3G in the first place. I was under the impression that had changed. I'm hoping it's true.

Prior to my iPhone 3GS, I had an iPhone 3G. The iPhone 3G worked flawlessly in terms of reception. I rarely got dropped calls, I never got voice or text messages late. I only upgraded for the faster speeds of the 3GS. I hope Apple and/or AT&T do something to fix the 3GS problems.

I have also noted reception variety in the same spot a lot more in 3.0 then with 2.2.1 on my 3G. At my house, I usually get 5 bars of 3G, but a lot of times it would drop down to one bar with 3.0. Also, just today I woke up at 11:35 am and turned on my iPhone and it got no texts or messages. Then at 12:05 I received a text and it said it was sent at 10:07. Although this happened under OS 2.x.x as well a few times. But, it does pick of texts normally after that. So I am betting it is AT&T not forwarding the text as soon as the phone turns on.

Oh, did you at all mess with the IPCC file in order to get tethering/MMS?

And I doubt it is hardware that is causing your problems( it could be, but your problems are shared with 3G owners as well). It is probably a software issue and hopefully will be fixed in 3.1.

I didn't mess with IPCC file. I don't even know what that is, so I doubt I messed with it. I just have a stock 32 GB iPhone 3GS that is not unlocked or jailbroken and with AT&T.
