Rev limiter would do nothing here. The rev limiter prevents over revving the engine on acceleration. When you down shift to a gear that is too low, it a mechanical issue and the rev limiter does nothing. Essentially, you are forcing the engine to over rev.

However, I do routinely make 6-4 downshifts all day long either to pass cars or for exit ramps with no problems. So at highway speeds, the ratio change from 6th to 4th is not causing any over revving.

Yeah, that kind of downshift is no issue. I will downshift to 3rd even on the highway. The issue is when the speed you are travelling would force the engine to over rev. Let's say you were doing 100 mph and downshifted to 2nd... that's the money shift. When you hear this happening, it is always someone who "intended" to shift from 5th/6th to 4th but put it in 1st or 2nd by accident.

The problem only occurs when the speed you are travelling is too high for the gear you downshift into.

i did the same thing on my e36 m3 back in days....wow what a feeling man

I shifted into 2nd trying to go into 4th at redline. DIASTER..Bent all valves.

It cost almost 4000 to fix.

I have owned 3 manuals car after that, and trust me you wont make same mistake. I still have fear of going into 4th gear sometimes.

good luck

I would spend at least 24 hours at a bar drinking vodka...but that's just me...you are handling it quite well, and that is a compliment.

Feel sorry for the money shift. Once you get your car fixed, try using this technique when going from 3rd to 4th.

http://blogs.superstreetonline.com/1...que/index.html

"Place the palm of your hand on the inside of the shifter and apply slight pressure towards the passenger side of the shifter while shifting downwards."

This will feel a bit awkward at first but once you get the hang of it, it will become second nature.

My buddy did the exact same thing to his E36 M3 back in the day, only 6 months old.

Completely blew his motor, not covered under warranty. Spent a fortune fixing it. Motor was beyond repair, had to replace the whole thing.

My friend did this on his e60 m5. Top of 5th and instead of 6th went into 4th. Bmw looked at the ecu and liked how he was driving so they split the $34,000 with him.

I was 20 and driving a new 8 month old 2000 Toyota Celica GTS 6mt - my first manual. Went from 5th to 2nd instead of 4th at 90mph by mistake. Bent valves and messed up the top end. Took a month but Toyota replaced all $28k under warranty. Props to the toy.

$28K for a 4 cylinder Toyota motor? Why bother replacing just the motor? Just buy a new one... or two!

Probably a tenth of that. Not even the most expensive model cost that much back then . Some people love to exaggerate .

Did this twice in my 98 Honda Prelude VTEC. Went from 3rd to second when meaning to shift 3-4. Felt and sounded like shit both times, but the car never skipped a beat afterwards.

That was a bullet proof motor...

Has alot to do with what the rpm's were on the previous gear. In your case if you are at or close to 7k and shift to the lower gear it is almost a sure thing the engine will be gone. Although those honda motors are freaks sometimes and take a beating!

I assume he had a 6 speed and not SMG, because SMG does not allow downshifts that cause mechanical over revs... that really sucked that he had to eat $17k. Better than $34k, but still.

Two of the codes were P1553 ,P1554 , I think these codes have to do with the cam sensor (or I read in book barometric manifold pressure signal ratio out of range?) I think it jumped its timing- timing has advanced. The last code was sib 11 05 05 someting to do with vanos, or seal or sensor - not sure . If any one has any ideas please let me know. Only had the car a month and there are no BMW dealers any where close. Thanks so much !!
The same thing happened to my friend he told bmw he was driving and he didnt know what happened the car just stopped. They replaced everything without him paying a dime. Warranty covered it 100% the invoice said over 7k.
