yeah me too Josh... unless it's used. B&H seems like it's closed more often than it's open.

Same here, and Amazon *if* it's Amazon who is selling it. The only 3rd party Amazon sellers I trust are Adorama and Beach Camera.

you might also try finding a local camera store that is not a chain and letting them know you want to give them business instead of B&H if they'll meet the price. tell them you'll buy it from them if the out-the-door price equals B&H.
i have this arrangement with a local store in Atlanta.

I tried rodi. But, they match the price before taxes, which kills the deal.

How do you calculate your "crop" factor on your shots? I mean literally (not the Crop body, as in 1.6, 1.3. I already know what that is). I mean by 100% crop, 98% crop, etc, etc....I have heard a couple different explanations and want a definitive answer....
It's been answered, but one or two of the answers were confusing. When you're editing with PS, LR, DxO, Elements or whatever, select a 50% view and the viewer will zoom in on the image. The size of the image on your screen will be determined by the resolution of your screen in pixels. So, if the image is 5000x3000 pixels and the longest full screen view of your screen is 1000 pixels, then you can only see the whole image in a 20% view. If you look at the image in a 100% view, then you'll only see 20% of its pixels on its longest edge. You'll have to scroll 5-screens to see the whole image. If your image size is 1000x800, then it would fill the longest side of a screen with resolution of 1000-pixels.

Anyway, the 25%, 50%, 100%, etc. is telling you pixel-to-pixel ratio of the actual image to the screen. At 100% a pixel in the file takes up one pixel on the screen. You're showing the image actual size.

I personally calculate my degree of crop by looking at the file size before and after crop. If it's 5000x3000 before crop and ends up 2500x1500 after crop, then I'll say that's a 50% crop. However, using that logic a 98% crop would only be 100x60 pixels, which is not what most people mean. When you say 100% crop and the screen ratio is the same as in my example above, the image size will end up 1000x600, which I might describe as an 80% crop, when others are taking into account their screen resolution and calling it a 100% crop.

Confused yet?

i'd love to be able to deal with a local store...but the only store in my area aside from Ritz is terrible. They don't keep any name brands in accessories, and they don't match B+H on prices...if they can even get something I want.

you know how in photoshop you get the little number down in the bottom left corner that has a % sign, click on it, then type 50% and you'll see what the picture looks like at 50% type in 98% and you'll see your 98% crop. So when you actually crop the image where you choose, it's still not at 100% full original file size. and you're getting a 50 or 98% crop.

wonder where i saw that price listed then..... I'll have a look around and see if i can find where i saw that.

1:1 is 1 pixel of your image equalling 1 pixel of your monitor.

generally on my screen, i'm only seeing the picture at 20% of it's original size and uncropped, but a lot of pixels don't show up as there aren't enough pixels on the screen to show it, the result is a compressed image in a way

at 100% there are no extra pixels to uncompress, so 100% is as much detail as it will ever get. if you zoom to 200% your screen is just using more of it's pixels to show you 1 pixel from the image and no benefits can be gained from this.

when you do a 100% crop, and cut the excess out of the image, what you see is what you get. you don't have to see the entire image, just what you need to show.

when someone says "here, this is a 100% crop for your viewing pleasure" all that's happened is someone has zoomed in on a picture to it's maximum resolution of 100% without going over, and provided you a small sample of the original picture at it's full size.

is that helping?

If you have Photoshop, view an image (or RAW file) at "Actual Pixels." Make sure you have the Info Window showing.

Drag the crop tool around an area 640 x 480 pixels (or whatever) and apply the crop. That image is now a 640x480 crop at 100%. If you then reduce the image size, it's still a 100% crop, just reduced.

The 5DII's with the 24-105 lens are all gone. That didn't take long. Lots of happy customers today, or lots of pissed off people getting emails saying it was a mistake and won't be honored.

Agreed!

When I need something in a rush, I always head straight to B&H. My second choice is Adorama, but when one's closed, so is the other...

Can you fill us in on this? Was it a pricing error?

that was him making a sarcastic remark about how Canon has made false promises in the past and resulted in some funny dealings with customers.

Nothing relating to these (as far as we know yet, too soon to tell)

AH, ok. I thought I missed out on a great deal. I've heard a few of those stories when I worked at Canon lol.

Very good to read, thank you!

[In the interests of fairness, though, I should add that as far as I'm aware both stores share the same opening / closing days and times.

BUT, Adorama now has a 'click by 7' shipping guarantee ie if you order a new in-stock item right up 'til 7:00 pm ET on a business day, provided there are no ID verification issues your order should ship that same day. Maybe that's why it seems Adorama is open more?]

the problem with that picture is, a lot of people find photography hard to swallow as an art form as it is, and seeing this picture, just doesn't help the cause.

B&H's used inventory has really increased. Lots of good stuff. I picked up a Panasonic DMC-FZ40 in near flawless condition for my sister for $225. I'm slowly putting decent cameras in the hands of my family members. If you're looking for a good P&S for your glovebox, now may be a good time.
