Don't do it man. They will pussify your car. I'd never let them do that to mine.

I picked up my car from 2 weeks of service and they flashed the computer. Itseems like it introduced some glitches in my radio. MP3s played off the internal hard drive have become a bit flaky. It seems to run rougher when it is cold. Shifts MIGHT be a bit quicker.

If the car idles at 1500 rpm all the time, its a problem. It should idle higher than normal when cold, but after a few minutes, it should idle about 700rpm or so. 1500 rpm is way to high. you may have a bad Idle Control Valve or something. I would definately take it back in. As for you having higher rpm is a given gear....like others have said, the only way to have that is to have a different gear ratio installed, which certainly didn't happen. The only other thing would be a slipping clutch, which I would also highly doubt. However, feel free to mention it to the SA when you take it in for the high idle.

you drive a 6-spd, I'm assuming you already think the DCT cars are pussified

had the software update and now the shift light setting off of the instrument cluster won't stay in the ON position. M Drive has it set as ON. After each start it loses the setting. The BMW regional tech came to look at the car and tried to reload all the software to the car and let the computer "sleep". Still not staying ON.... as of now he had to refer this back to BMW NA!

Alright guys, took the car back in today and an hour later everything seems to be back normal. RPM's are back to normal, approx 500/600 at idle. And the best part, they say they did nothing...sounds fishy, but whatever...just glad that it was nothing major.
HD radio is back to the way it was when the car was flashed after ED, fades in and out when going from standard to HD, but no big worries for me in this area. Thanks again for everyones feedback. Much appreciated. |

The shifts lights are a key dependant setting, if you set them "on" in the M key setting in idrive (not the same as setting them "on" for the M button) they should remain on for that key. The default setting is "off" for all keys. A software update usually resets all key settings to default. Last edited by SenorFunkyPants; 10-22-2010 at 09:53 AM.. |

Hey guys just to clarify, The new DCT update has NOTHING to do with the way the car PERFORMS IT"S ALL IN YOUR HEAD. I work at a BMW DEALERSHIP and my 2010 E90 M3 is getting the update right now. I have a master tech working on my car. This update has nothing to do with faster shifts or any thing of the sort.

That may very well be true for people who have a newer car like yours or have had a software update recently. But anyone who has not had their software updated this year for example will see changes to the DCT performance after getting the update. If the master tech were to disputes this particular point, then it is most likely because he has been instructed not to talk about it by BMW's legal department.
If you'd like to know more about the history of DCT updates see the sticky thread at the top of this forum. Quote:

I put 50,000 miles on a 2009 DCT. I don't think DCT cars are pussified; I was contributing to your comment about slower shifts.

I concur with mkoesel's post #31. I have a 2009 M3 with DCT and just got it back from its first big servicing yesterday. I had the software update done to my car and NOW, AFTER the software update the DCT is smooth like butter. But PREVIOUSLY, BEFORE the software update it was a very jerky, confused, up/down shift car with a noticeable lag.
We, as in 2008 & 2009 M3 DCT owners, are happy that our complaints seem to have been heard by BMW NA so that they invested time in improving the DCT shift logic for the newer 2010+ cars. Long story short Mr.MichaelM3, "you're welcome." |

I have an April 08 built DCT and there are a few very noticable differences with the car. Not all bad as Faceman says just different and not as good as pre "2.39.0 or higher" upgrade.
It feels like the rpms hang on up shifts. The gear changes very quickly but now there is lag in the throttle. Pre upgrade the shifts were more pronounced, crisp and probably harder on the driveline but, way more enjoyable to drive in my opinion. Also, I find myself trying to grab 8th gear at 80 on freeway because it has to be idling higher. What do you think of this? - on my service report it states: "Program with ISTA/P 2.39.0 of higher. Performed complete programming including SMG MODULE. SMG - WTF Another thing. It is very annoying to be in the habit of selecting 1st gear and and by the time I get Howard 100 on the ECU is already grabbing 2nd. It is ridiculous how often and unnecessarily it up shifts in D mode. When new my sales guy said that it defaulted to D so when that gearhead valet assumes it is an auto selects S1 and hammers it to red assuming it will shift. A service guy changed default to S1 the day I got it. I don't know how but, I will try to find out. |

M3-33,
Nothing you wrote makes any sense.

I will try to make sense for you rad. What happens when you let off the gas completely while driving a car under accelleration? If you are in a manual or, in my case a dct something known as engine braking occurs. Ever heard of it?
Well joe, now I have about a 1/4 second delay until engine braking occurs from when I removed foot completely. My throttle hangs joe and it didn't until the recent software upgrade. Does that make any sense to you at all? If it does not make any sense joe then - Futue te ipsum! |

So you can use the internet to look up insults. My guess is you didn't learn latin in school. Two months to reply? Did it take you that long to string together two coherent paragraphs? If you had posted the above, initially, we would have all understood your issue and commented accordingly.
