Faint mettalic chatter when driving (6MT)
Hi guys,
So I'm trying to establish whether this is mechanical or an interior rattle, but what I can only describe is a fainter version of your girlfriends bangle rattle (Ie two metallic bangles on her arm clicking against one another) when I drive at any RPM. I thought it was a rattle coming from behind the iDrive (Could well be) but I just want to know if its a normal rattle or not before I go banging other parts of my dash. Its annoying now that I think it's a rattle because even though its faint (I mean windows up no radio faint) it can be heard if you're listening for it. It is definitely not plastic rattling, it's either a screw on a washer (metallic), or mechanical (i.e. normal). I'm pretty sure it's a rattle as if I bang the centre console near the iDrive i'm pretty sure I can replicate it. TIA.

I have a similar (faint) chatter - when I depress the clutch pedal it goes away. The noise in my car is most likely the flywheel (my guess anyways).

Same thing for me In 1st gear at about 4-5k I get what sounds like a chatter or clinking noise. Comes and goes car has 85k kilometers. Doesn't do it all the time though and it was the first colder day of the season 14 degrees Celsius.
Not sure if it's the same issue as you but you really have to listen for it with radio off and windows up. Hasn't happened since, maybe it's my mind playing tricks on me ! |

I've been noticing it more now lately as well. Only really noticable between 2500 - 3000 rpm in 2nd or 3rd when its at low speed and accelarating. I don't notice any difference in the feel of the car.

throwout bearing, it's normal for high performance clutches. You think it's loud for the M3? You should hear it on my old Evo 8. High performance cars generally are very noisy, I give credit to BMW for toning it down on the M3. On other sports cars you can hear everything, tire roar, diff chatter, TO chatter, spring compression, gears engaging, brakes clicking, gravel hitting the undertray, really puts you in touch with what driving is all about.

Does anyone read their supplementary manuals? Yes that's a totally normal sound. From a stand, do an "inch forward" with decent rpms and rapidly depress the clutch. This will allow you to hear the throwout bearing in all its glory.

I know what throwout bearing noise is... Did you read my original post? I think (In my case anyway... ) it must be a faint dash rattle. In any case I will mention it at my next service and see what they say. If it is a rattle I'd say they'd probably make it worse ripping my dash apart so i'll probably just deal with it if that is the case.

I bet it's the silver iDrive circular knob. It gives a slight metallic chatter sometimes.
Lightly put your hand on it when you hear the noise and see if it goes away.

Found a new noise tonight... Umm, trying to think the best way to describe it.
Its on my driver door, coming from the front where it connects to the car... And the best way to describe it is the sound of sexual intercourse the sort of sloshing of her bodily fluids on your shaft. I can replicate it with the door open by opening and closing the door pocket.. although now the sexual novelty has worn off and it is annoying me.

I just got my car back after 3 weeks in service for the third time. It has a ticking noise every time I take off on first and second gears at low rpm. They replace the shaft seal, the securing plates and greased the whole thing. After a few days the noise is back, the car is a 2008 E90 with 26,300 miles in it, any advice?

I didn't say it wasn't loud, there was no clicking sound from the engine. The supercharger whistle sounded amazing. Pay attention...we're talkin about metallic clicking sound.

Gt500 is noisy. You should go for a ride in my 04 cobra, you would be clawing and scratching to get back into your m3!

Metallic chatter noises from drivetrain is almost certainly..the differential..clutch type LSD are known to make these noises and they are usually perfectly normal...
Was the 1200 mile break in service done? it requires the differential and MT fluid be replaced. |

If it was normal why would BMW pay for expensive repairs to have the crankshaft, main bearings replaced to get rid of the clicking sound from the engine?
Maybe at idle but you shouldn't hear metallic clicking sound(injector ticking, flywheel etc.) at wot. |
