Thumbs up M3 Beats Out RS5 and CTS-V Coupe in C&D Shootout

As reported on M3POST HOMEPAGE.

This is going to be good. I guess this is a teaser video of their comparison. Data below from M3Bliss.

Even factoring out the subjective "Fun to Drive" category the victory was decisive. The overall owner experience is more than just numbers hence the grading categories. Enjoy.

Left column is the RS5, center is the M3, and the rightmost is the CTS-V.

Here are the numbers from the test. I don't see a link on their website for the comparo yet.

As is usual with most car magazines, they will no doubt pick the newest kid on the block as the winner. I bet it will be the CTS V. The M3 will come in last because it's the oldest car of the 3. I hope I'm wrong.

Look and see who has the most advertisements in the mag, see if it lines up I remember some mag did a roadster shootout and picked the SC200 out of the Z4, Boxter, etc. Every other page was a Honda advert.

Should be close but the RS5 is brand new as is the CTS V coupe (or will they test the sedan?)

Where is the Panamera?

How can you go wrong with any of these cars?

Received the actual article today and the M3 kicked serious ass in the comparo. The tested car did have the competition pkg. and simply outclassed the RS5 and CTS-V. I have to admit I was suprised since it is the "oldest" car of the three but the virtues that have been a part of the present design continue to define the true car and driver experience.

The M3 from the scan, looked like ran a 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds and 1/4 mile in 12.4@114 mph.

So that means the competition package M3 is faster even in a straight line than the standard model?

Different test with different environments have all had different results. This is the fastest I've seen though, 4.1 DCT being the previous best in test (non ZCP). I'm interested in the details, if its DCT, MDM or launch mode, test pavement conditions, etc. There is a strip of pavement near my house that is just like fly paper. Even my GT500 gets a bite on that strip of road. One night I'm going to test my 0-60 on it with DSC off, see if what I can hit.

Nice. Thanks. I'm also curious what settings they used. I can't imagine why the straight line times would be better with the competition package. However, the wider grip and adaptive EDC in sport mode should improve lap times on certain tracks.

3.9s 0-60 means a roll out start... has to IMO. Standing 0-60 for ANY stock M3 have not been under 4's anywhere. I think a lot of the mags do rolling starts which could explain the 3.9 result. Having said that, it looks like all 3 are similar in performance with the Caddy pulling a bit as speed increases... that it what I would have expected.

Yeah just noticed they have a rolling 5-60 row and its slower than the 0-60. Looks like they were switched by accident. Switched it makes more sense.

Rolling starts for C&D tests are usually slower than the 0-60 times. Check out an example below:

I believe all American car mags use a one-foot rollout for 0-60 and 1/4 mile. The previous time of 4.1s for the DCT M3 was done this way, so this is comparable. I'm sure the difference is due more to environment, although I wonder how much different launch control is on the ZCP with its re-calibrated EDC and MDM. Note that 1/4 time is identical to previous tests of the M3. I really expected the Caddy to do better 0-60, but its power shows in the higher speeds.

And the M3 is more comfortable than the Caddy? What's this world coming to?

Cheers.

Yeah I would expect environmental factors to likely explain the times. These are also the best times I have seen posted on the RS5. However, best 1/4 mile time I have ever seen on a stock M3 is 12.6.
