How long will it take to get your new M3

A bit of history: When E46 M3 came out there were about 300 delears in NA. They each got 1 Laguna Seca Blue dealer demo car (Feb, Mar?) and in the three months following (03/01 - 05/01) there was about 1000 M3s delivered to the US. So the average was about 1 car per dealer per month. I think production was ramping up and demand worldwide greatly exceeded supply. Some strong dealers probably got as many as 3-5 per month and some of the smallest or weakest dealers could not even get (or perhaps did not need) a single car per month. The new M will be substantially more expensive than then E46 M3 but also a much more enticing car. I would guess demand will be about the same as the E46 M3. I'm not sure if BMW will be more prepared for the demand or not. Some even suspect they restricted demand in 2001 to drive sales longer out in the future. It would be totally against desire for cash flow if they did but may be a fruitful long term strategy. After the hype of the first calendar year and the catch up to demand in the second calendar year of release (still 01 model year) you could count on taking delivery 3 months after your dealer has your allocation (i.e. if you order the car per your "specs").

You will have to evaluate the size of your dealer, how different you think E90 will be compared to E46, your spot on the list and then you can estimate when you will get your baby after NA production begins. Hope this helps.

you know wat sucks about the list?
Wen the dealer tells u your #1... Thats to yo sales person...
So u could bel ike #5 because of other dealers... So if you want to get a good spot ont he list go talk 2 the sales manager so he enters u int he computer 1st before the others.. you do not want to end up being #6 in march wen u thought u were #1

I am #2 at my dealership. I spoke with my BMW salesperson and she told me that the coupe, sedan, and convertible were going to be released at the same time. She said it like it was a fact. Now, I don't completely believe that, but it also doesn't matter to me because I am either buying the M3 coupe, or will buy a slightly used M5 for the same money.

You mean because of other SALES people at the same dealer right? No decent dealer would tell you you are a spot # on one sales persons list without making it global across their entire dealership. You never know what they may try to pull over on you though....

+1. I'd make a huge wager against such a simultaneous launch. Not the way production lines or automobile launches with "niche" cars work.

That will upset a lot of people out there on the list.
Though, not everyone can be number one.

As with many things, this varies by dealer. My spot is for MSRP and for the 2nd spot at the Dealer, not my sales person.

As Swamp mentioned, it just isn't in BMWNA's financial best interest to drop the Coupe, Cab, and Sedan at the same time. They haven't done this in the past and with the E92 release, I'm sure it will be no different.

A firm price is not yet known, however, most are estimating about $8k above 2006 E46 M3 base price for the new M. I'd place a big wager against the base prices being within $5k. Go grab yourself the 335i!

Most folks are still leaning toward below $60k USD base, based on calculations as well as psychology. However, BMW is taking a step up and will be competing against 911, 911S, RS4 and AM Vantage, all a lot pricier than $60k base.

Now waiting till 03/08 at least.

My dealer is telling me 2-3 years, and I'm #24 on their list. I'm sure they're trying to "under promise" however.

No, not really. Most dealers are saying they'll get about 2 m3's per month. So 24 would put you 2 years down the line.

Do you really think it will take 4 years for BMW to "fix the bugs"? BMWs are fairly reliable and are covered with a great warranty. I really don't think waiting for 4 years to let BMW "fix the bugs" is a realistic nor honest strategy. Please tell us the real reason why you won't buy this car until 2011.
