spent the better part of last night specing out a new computer for video and photo editing. my current desktop is old and out of date. ordered all the parts from newegg. what does forum think? did i make any mistakes? i used to know all about this stuff but not so much anymore....

here are specs:
antec nine hundred ATX case
asus p5q mobo
intel core 2 duo E8500 3.16ghz
sapphire 100225L 512mb radeon hd pcie 2.0 blah blah
LG blu-ray burner

rosewill 950W power supply
g.skill 4gb ddr2 1066 ram
2x seagate barracuda 500GB 7200RPM drives
samsung 24" display

did i miss anything? sound good for amateur video editing? i wanted to splurge and go all out but i didn't feel like spending more than i did (approx. $1500 for everything.) opinions needed plox!

looks good, however, i would have waited till the new intel i7 core processors came out...those are absolute beast!!

4GB is good, 8GB is great, especially for video editing and such. never can have too much memory

that's bad to look at. now i want to upgrade already that's a lot more $$ to my build though. i'd have to get a different, better mobo with ddr3 to really crank the power out of it though. ahh! i have to make a decision soon, newegg hasn't shipped yet.

Going for a i7 would be much much more money. First off, the processor alone would be $500 more. Motherboards will be priced at a high premium as well. Not to mention they are all purely DDR3, which is still pricey compared to DDR2.

While the i7 is truely an awesome platform, if you are trying to keep the cost down this isn't an option.

As for your build, if you are going to be doing solely video/picture editing then you may want to look at buying a quad core cpu. Since that is where they excel at. If you are going to game on it, then a dual core would be best.

Macs

I build my own computers, cheaper and works great. I have one now powering a home music studio. Macs are overpriced and over hyped and obviously not for the DIY'er

Do you have a screenshot of the checkout summary for individual prices? Also, I think 950W is a bit much for your system. Unless you plan on upgrading to 2 beefy graphics cards any time soon.

I built a computer about 6 months ago. 512mb 8800GT, 780i nForce mobo, Q9450 quad core cpu, and a 750gb hd. I'm running it on a 750W power supply because I have plans for running some newer cards in SLI at some point in the future when nvidia decides to excel their technology by a significant margin. My build cost me $1300 then, could probably get it for nearly $1k now. And it runs everything like a dream.

I also got a Antec Nine Hundred case. Its awesome. Hit me up if you need help or advice in building it when the time comes.

What prompted you to choose the Radeon HD 3870 btw? You could get a 9800GT for nearly the same price.

Also, the blu-ray burner might be alittle overkill. And definately is a bit pricey still at an average price of $250-$275.

For $140, this is a much better card. You definately don't want to skimp on your graphics if your going to be doing heavy editing. Especially in video.

$167.99 ($137.99 after $30.00 Mail-In Rebate) - Radeon HD 4850 512MB

I personally am more of a nVidia person. I like their drivers better. But nVidia costs more for what you get. (even though as of lately the priceerformance ratio is awesome in both brands) But mind you, the 4850 I quoted above is probably a better card than this. So its a tough choice.

$129.99 ($99.99 after $30.00 Mail-In Rebate) - GeForce 9800 GT 512MB
For the price range $100-150, this would be a decent card.

OS? hope your going to run 64-bit especially if you are going to up the ram to 8gb in the future. I would go with a quad core over the dual core I have been putting the q9400 in machines I have been building, its great. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115131

If you do make sure your MB is compatible etc....

Both CPUs use the LGA775 socket. So there shouldn't really be any compatibility issues.

Here is a link to one of the older Q6600 chips. So you can compare price and stats.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115018

This is a OEM version. So it won't come with a heatsink, fan, or any thermal paste. But that all amounts up to like $30-$50. Not too pricey and you get better cooling anyways which means you can overclock it more, if your overclocking.

make sure you run in raid, faster performance...except you're screwed if one HDD goes out...

replace the vid card with a quadro - they're amazing from what I hear for video editing...not to mention ATI seems to be going down a hole w/ AMD

their shares are $2.50....
