Punctured engine block

So as some of you know, purchased a used 2008 bmw m3 with 110k miles. After 4 days of driving it, engine blew.... ends up being that a rod punctured the engine block... took it back to the dealership I bought it from and were weighing options. Trying to see if bmw of America can do anything... if not, looks like we have to swap the engine with a used one

I'm here to share my sadness with you guys

Haha

Incredible.. Really. As an ex auto mechanic I can not fathom that a company like BMW screwed up the design of a simple rod bearing. It really is hard to believe. My Acura TLs has 178,000 miles on it.. Purrrrs like a kitten

My 08 M3 roars like a Lion... but for how long?

That's two or three members with bearing failure in the last two weeks. I hope it is not a sign of what is to come as these cars are hitting 100,000 miles.

Known issue with our cars 2008-2013 get the red bearing fix costing anywhere from 2000-3000 and you are all set. Unfortunately for you it destroyed the engine before you got a chance to take care of this. Hopefully BMW NA can Goodwill or help out with some of the cost.

I did but only on the day of. The engine made a weird ticking sound around 3,000 rpm right before it blew. It's not like it was happening a couple days prior or weeks. So I didn't even have a chance to save it.

I agree . Only financial speculation matters.
While BMW knows from *2005* that the S85-B50 bearings failed !
That's 13 years...and more BF's will come for sure !

I see . And it really s@cks !
I know from my database , the worldwide S65 bearing failure is real !
And I know also that only a small % of the worldwide bearing failures are on Bimmerpost . And that only 40-50 % of the Bimmerpost members will post a S65 bearing failure .
Actually It's a normal reaction . Because people think about the value of the car.
It's for sure the whole situation is pretty bad for the S65 reputation...

Someone has a F82 engine and trans foe sale on here for $8,700 shipped with 9k miles. Hard to believe our engines cost so much more used(I understand why, just surprised the new M engines are so cheap!). Put a lower mile S65 in and change the bearings and seals before you do it and you should get years of enjoyment out of it. Sorry this happened to you. Were you at really high RPM's when it happened?

Nothing I can really sue for. The item worked when I drove off the lot. The fact that they offer a half half warranty is cool... we'll get it figured out one way or another

Yes I was driving aggressive and once I slowed down I started to hear the ticking at 3k rpm

Looks like a junkyard or dealer who only joined to sell his parts. Do your due diligence and ask lots of questions about history and current condition before buying an engine from these types of sources.

Yes looks like he’s parting out, but it looks like he’s parting out a whole car. He has the interior there. Of course ask for the ODO from same car.

It is not without reason. BMW is putting generic engines in the M4. Their added cost for making an S55 engine over a regular 3/4 series engine is very small since it is the same 3.0L block with minor modifications. The turbo comes from Mitsubishi.

Yeah being as though it is a more common 3.0 for sure! I still love my S65 more!

I am a bit curious why you hanged on to your M3 for all these years and at the same time been quite vocal about blown engines. Is it because of lost value that makes selling it an unnatractive option which i understand or because the thrill is worth the engine concerns to you ?
