When filling gas, pump stops before full

As title; When I'm pumping gas the pump will stop before its full I have to then pull the pump out a bit and continue. Do these cars typically have problems with EVAP? Or is the fill tube just too narrow?

I get very little in trying to top off. If you are using the same place to fuel it may be that they have a little zippier pumps than average, you run into them here or there.

Always happens to me. I rotate the handle a bit and it usually will restart and continue. It bugs me. Never had this issue on any other cars.

Note: only happens to me at chevron....damn!

This usually happens to me in Chevron only. Now I just go to Shell or 76.

Never experienced this issue in my '08. As said by others, it is likely the pump that is causing the problem.

Same here, this annoys me to no end. Not sure why it happens.

Only happens for me at Chevron stations with my E90's. Never had this issue with my E82 or E92. I think the pump isn't detecting a good seal so it stops.

It is not your car but the pump itself. That happens to me sometimes. I find if i rotate the pump to the right approx 30 degrees it solves the problem.

Agree. Not unique to Chevron as stated in other parts of this thread. I've had the same issue with Shell and Exon. There is another thread out there with this issue dissected. Something about a pressure buildup. Rotating the nozzle seems to fix the problem, albeit, it may take a couple of tries.

Happens to me too once in a while. It seems to happen when I get a "fast" pump. Pulling the nozzle out a bit usually fixes the problem.

Never had an issue but I always trust that its full on the first stoppage. My E46 and E90 ALWAYS overflows if I try to top it off.

I agree. It seems to be pressure build up and the pump sensed it thought the tank is full. What I do is I squeeze the handle manually lightly so the gas goes into the tank slower and not too fast. That always help. When you do it as I mentioned, you can feel the back pressure but it wouldn't trigger the pump to stop pumping gas but the pump would still stop when the tank is full. I noticed that problem with my previous 350Z also and my Inifiniti FX also so it's not only the M3.

sometimes if i tilt the nozzle too much it will stop...so i hafta fill propping the nozzle sort of upwards so the gas is flowing down.

just gotta fiddle with it at times

This happened to me on my e92 and on my cayman. I had to rotate the nozzle so it will fill up entirely or pull back the suction cup at the head of the nozzle. It is not because the EVAP of the car; it is because of the HEALY system installed on the gas pumps. Either rotate the nozzle or pull back the suction cup on the nozzle. This will occur at stations with new pumps: chevron, 76, wherever. HEALY systems recover the gasoline vapors which build up in pressure as you pump.

so i figured it out finally on my car...when i put the hose in a little cocked to the side so the black boot on the hose doesn't form a good seal around my inlet (allowing air gap), it works just fine and fills up properly.

Same problem

Had the same issue with a 3 week old 2013 m3 conv. Also had an icreased emmissions warning. Car has now been back at the dealer for a week with a new valve being replaced that was supposed to be shunting the gas fumes through the exhaust but instead out of the tank. Now replacing the dmtl valve. Pretty good start for 3 weeks in, don't you think? And this replaced a 2011 550i that had so many problems they let me out early....
