does extended warranty transfer to new owner?

hi guys,

before i bought my 2010, i checked with a service rep at a bmw dealer and he told me that the previous (original owner) of the car did purchase the extended warranty. however, he said that if i buy the car, only the extended maintenance is transferred over to me. the extended repair will not. is this true or just absolutely BS?

thanks,

If a car has a CPO warranty then it is attached to the VIN and not the owner

its not a CPO. i did not buy it at a BMW dealer and there is no warranty paperwork. this is just by the service rep looking into the car record

Can anyone answer me this. I went to go look at a 2011.5 E92 with 11000 miles over the weekend that had perfect service records, not a single flaw, and had ~ 3 years left on the factory warranty. 1 owner carfax and the only service on record was the 1200 mile and an oil change.

When I asked the dealer why it wasn't a CPO or if it could be CPOed they pretty much told me that M3s are not CPOed. I told him that there were some on the BMW website that were CPO and he really didn't have an answer.

I couldn't get him down to the price I wanted so I didn't purchased the car but I wanted to know why it's so hard to find CPO on this car and why this dealer told me it didn't exist.

Your dealer sounds like a real piece of work.

It is not hard to find CPO on an M3 but it is expensive M3 warranties are just expensive in general. Your dealer sounds like they have no idea what they are telling you.

As to extended warranty transfers:

To transfer your contract, within thirty (30) days of a change in ownership of the vehicle, submit to the contract administrator a completed transfer application form together with a fifty dollar ($50) transfer fee, unless a different amount is specified in section 10, along with all of the following:

1. a notarized copy of the documentation showing change of title and odometer reading on the date of ownership change
2. proof of maintenance in accordance wit the manufacturer's specifications
3. if the manufacturers warranty requires a transfer, a copy of the completed transfer form
4. your original contract and declaration page, and
5. the name and address of the new owner

The transfer application form may be obtained from the contract administrator. Transfer applications are subject to approval by the contract administrator. In the event the transfer application, fee, and required documentation is postmarked more than thirty (30) days after the change in ownership, then this contract may become non-transferable.

call who holds the warranty see if you can transfer it generally there is a fee attached.

I had a warranty on my z06 and I was able to transfer it to the new owner for $50 dollars and 2 pages of paperwork.

Hard to say without seeing the contract. I know on an old BMW I had a third-party extended warranty through the dealer that had a provision similar to what Legion5 posted, meaning the warranty could be transfered. When I bought my M3 the dealer tried to sell me the BMW extended warranty and said it was transferable but I quickly declined and so have never seen the official documents related to the BMW warranty. Only way to tell is to see the contract.

In your case it is possible the car has the BMW extended maint. which does transfer but the extended warranty is a third party and the owner did not transfer it when he sold/traded the car back to the dealer, letting the 30 day window expire.

It used to be that BMW extended warranties would transfer to a new owner. Not to mention that it had to be purchased by the original owner before the sale/transfer. I believe the same holds true for extended maintenance (I bought it for my E46M3 and it went with the car).

FWIW I just declined purchasing the extended warranty and the dealer advised that it would be transferable to a new owner or if under their payment plan I could terminate it and get a pro-rated refund.

Right, but we and apparently the OP don't know is who is the extended warranty from. Agreed, a BMW warranty should transfer with the car just like the extended maintenance does. Clearly the original owner bought a third-party warranty and it was not properly transferred so it is now void...

The extended warranty (if from BMW) definitely transfers with the car, no paperwork involved just take it to the dealership when she calls for service. I know this first hand for a fact.

I believe it is from BMW because I checked with a BMW service rep. and that's what he told me. he said maintenance warranty will transfer and last until 04/2016 or 100k miles. but repair warranty does not. are these separate? repair and maintenance?

There are two different packages that BMW sells, an extended warranty and an extended maintenance plan. They are exactly what they describe but two distinct products.

If the car truly has a BMW extended warranty, the only way it does not covert the car is if the mileage is that high. I forget exactly what the extended warranty covers but want to say it should be the same, good until 04/2016 and 100k miles.

Again, BMW dealers usually offer both BMW warranties and third-party warranties. The only way I can see your car not being covered is if the warranty was actually a third-party warranty that was not properly transferred when the original owner sold/traded it in...

Might want to call BMWNA to see if they can use your VIN to check for the BMW warranty because your service rep either doesn't know what he's talking about or he's simply not giving you all the information. It should be pretty straight forward for him to find out if it is a BMW extended warranty (which would still be in effect) or a third-party warranty...

just to update, I contacted BMW NA service rep, they told me they can transfer regular warranty and extended maintenance to me no problem and they already did it. for extended warranty, they told me to contact either the original dealer or the 3rd party vendor. so I called the 3rd party vendor, and they require the previous owner to contact them and fill out the application to transfer. this is where I am stuck. i don't know who he is and even if i do, i don't think i should contact him. i asked the dealer where i bought the car to see if they can help contact the previous owner but i think that's all i can do. if he says no, then the extended warranty will just be voided. hate to see the waste of money, but it's all i can do i guess. so just to confirm what everyone has said, yes it is transferable only if the original owner agrees to. thanks everyone

That's what I figured... If you really want the warranty, there might still be third-party options out there so do some research. The ones your dealer sells usually have to be purchased by the original owner but some third-party might not...
