If you are looking for every last ounce of performance any M3 is not the way to go. The M3s are outstanding all-round cars, however they are not the last word in performance.

Coupe - It's more practical, looks better and with sun roof, I get the open air feel
Carbon Fiber roof - not a consideration - just so much bling Performance - not a consideration - 95% of my driving is on a highway or city street Weight - not a consideration - See performance above - Besides I need to loose a few pounds myself. Weather - Big consideration - With a few exceptions there are very few true convertible days around the country. At some point you've got to put the top up to keep from being fried. Someone said they like to drive to work in the morning with the top down. Agree, but by 11:00AM the top probably has to come up until 4 or 5PM. (Reminder - I said there were exceptions). Even in Florida and Southern Calif mid-day sun dictates the top coming up. Spring and Fall probably best convertible weather, but I drive a car year round. Noise - not a consideration - Coupe with windows open and roof open not too much quieter than the convertible; besides, cars next to me don't need to be listening to my radio (big irritant) |

I have the top down almost every day as long as the temps are above ~45 and it's not raining, although I have kept the top down during light showers. Once or twice a year, just for shits and giggles, I will keep the top down during a snow storm. This really is a fun experience and I recommend everyone try it at least once. I also keep a tube of SPF 50 sun block in the car.

Lets not forget that the exhaust note and the compliments expressed towards you and your car from pedestrians and other road-users are easier to hear when the roof is down.
I went for the Z4 because I didn't need 4 seats while living in China (taxi's are so inexpensive here). Then it became an easy choice because the Z4 is simply not available as a coupe... Had I needed 4 seats I would have had the M3 E91 sports wagon with a glass roof. It's such a fantastic combination of practicality, joy and beauty. (I think if I keep pretenting it exists, someday it will!) |

Last week I pulled next to a white E93 with a nice looking, 30 something female at the wheel with the top down. She and the car made an attractive combination. I'm glad I was in a coupe. For some reason, I would have felt a bit silly if I was in a E93. I have a 997 cab. I woud not have felt silly in that car. I really can't explain why the E93 doesn't seem manly to me...no offense to any E93 owners.

This is completely unrelated to the above post and I know I should not be responding to this; but I just can't help myself. And I probably know your initials are M.F. and you own an M3; BUT your forum name...mfM3...just screams male-female-male 3-some. Or maybe it's just my warped mind.

Simple, really...if you need a convertible, you will not exploit the full potential of an M3, so buy a 335i drop top. On the other hand, if you are at all serious about track performance, you should not even be asking this question; the M3 coupe is the obvious answer. Or, just get an Ariel Atom; open air driving and more performance than you know what to do with. Good luck.

I am very serious about track performance and have dedicated track cars and hold an SCCA competition license and over the years have competed in several different classes. IMO if you are truly serious about tracking you wlll eventually get involved in racing. In its stock form the M3 coupe is a decent track day car but it is by no means a race car. Trust me, you do not want a race car as a daily driver. For the vast majority of people the limitations of track performance is the driver not the car.

Threads like this are the reason I hardly come to this forum anymore.

I am willing to bet a small minority here actually "exploit the full potential" of any M3.

on my runs around town after work in the winter, i'll have the top down as long as the sun's shining and it's above freezing (otherwise my top doesnt open / close, although i do have a trick to bypass that ). Winter jacket, gloves, and the heat / heated seats cranked up, makes for an overall great feeling ! havent tried the snow storm yet ! anyway, to answer the question, the only drawback of a convertible is that many tracks dont allow them, which is why i havent been on a track yet. other than that, with the speed limits the way they are and the lack of attention / driving skills of the general public, you'll never fully exploit 300whp (in my case) or 414hp for the M3 on an open road, so why not enjoy the open air, exhaust note, landscape 100x better with the top down? and for those who think i'm a "wuss" or a "pussy" for driving a vert, a quick downshift / short race usually changes their mind quick... and well, to be honest, one way or the other, i dont really care what people think !!! |
