Dodged another bullet

Since getting my M3 this month I have had a lot of close calls (tickets that is). Last night I was driving home around 10PM. We live in the hills around Portland and there is one small stretch of road through a canyon near my house which is about a 2 mile stretch with some nice tight second gear hairpin turns. This is a secluded and isolated road with little to no traffic at this hour. So I decide to take this road before going home. Blast down, the car is awesome, the car just wants to go faster! I reach the end, turn around and go back up the way I came- my own personal hill climb.

Suddenly a thought pops in my head- 'you're going too fast, you're going to get a ticket', just as I come out of the last hairpin. I think to myself, 'well if you feel that way, just slow down'. I do, and cruise up the last 1/4 mile of the road and reach the top (where I was just 3 minutes before) to see... not one, not two but THREE patrol cars waiting for me!!! I think OMG, they heard me blasting up and are ready to lock me up. But no, they are just having a late night chat. I roll on by SLOWLY, and count my blessings.

Whew! I need a track day...

hahaha....You're luck man! Who knows, if you had went by pretty fast by them....Then maybe they'd come after you. I hate getting tickets. Not only because of the fine or the scar on my record.....But because I got caught.

I have those gut feelings also, and it's an absolute nightmare to get pulled over. Let's just say I'm not the slowest driver out there.

If I go fast on the steet it is for very short bursts. Law of averages. I've also found that track days with the BMW or other clubs greatly reduces the need to exercise this car on public roads.

Excellent idea! I think I need to enroll to a track day then.

I get the "there's a popo waiting for in front" feeling quite sometimes, and I would say it is correct at about 80% of the time. The rest of the 20% is just me being paranoid.

Get yourself a radar detector. I recommend Valentine. It's paid for itself several times. It makes spirited driving days even more fun.

My detector has saved me a few times but I have to admit most times it just lets me know the second the instant-on pegs me. Very few highway patrolmen seem to use constant-on here in Colorado anymore (at least between Pueblo and Colorado Springs anyway). Apparently they go for quality, not quantity. Let's face it, it's not hard to spot a speeding vehicle and radar it.

I agree...My V1 has saved my career a few times. Now if I can just figure out how to keep the Infiniti QX4s from setting off the laser warning. Every time I pass one in the oncoming lane it goes off. There is something in the grill of the QX4 that transmits. I'm not exactly sure what it is.

Probably radar/laser cruise control.

Probably a range finder for a "parking too close" warning or for automatic braking

Great story and good for you!

The exhilaration of the life you feel over 6k RPMs is quickly replaced by the snap of cuffs on your wrist.

Glad it worked out. Stay safe!

Very true- I can just feel the warmth of the hood of patrol car on my cheek as they press my face down to frisk me and put on the cuffs!

Funny- after that night I just can't drive that road like before- Did the same thing on the way home, slowed down and nothing, all clear... oh well.

Oh, of course the V1 was hardwired the first day. Trust me though, any cop will bust you if you are flat out in our M3 on a road where the speed limit is 35 mph. They are an expert witness and any 'display of speed' or excessive speed estimates will hold up in court. No pacing, VASCAR, RADAR or LASER required!
