Exposed Mufflers..why?...

Just spent some quality time staring at my E90's a$$....Does anyone really understand why the designers and engineers all stood around at some point in the process and said "yep, the back end looks perfect"..even though the muffler system is clearly visible below the exhaust pipes?...it would have been so easy to design around and under the quad pipes!!??...or is there some conspiracy we don't know about...??
Looking forward to some very "informative" answers....

Hey, you're into uncharted territory here. It's obvious they were concerned about the flow out the center in the rear, the way the muffle body is pinched in the middle. Still seems they could have shrouded it somehow without screwing up the aero, or at least painted it black.

lol. well for the z we get a giant horizontal muffler that acts as a rear diffuser (zero lift whoo hoo) so i'm guessing it has to do with how the air moves through the under carriage.

On topic: We all noticed this really early on and there was much complaining about it. I think it may be the biggest design flaw on the car. Sure I have seen many other pictures of many other cars, even some very high end ones, with partially exposed mufflers. Either way I still think it looks like crap. I'll certainly live with it though...

Chris Bangle asked his designers to emulate this.

LOL..

I don't like the exposed mufflers either...one of the first things I noticed and commented on when we saw the first rear shots of the car.

However, several of the aftermarket guys have some really clean looking exhausts that are rather well concealed behind the rear bumper/diffuser. Also, many comments I hear is that the stock exhaust is too quiet. I like a louder exhaust...so, ugly stock exhaust + quiet stock exhaust = 2 reasons for me to buy an aftermarket unit. Problem solved.

Well, a while back we moved "up" on the totem pole. So now he is more of an overlooker than a designer IIRC. The designs are "better" than they were......but his influence is still there.

Hell, without him we never would of had cars with the "Bangle Butt". lol

It doesnt botherme, I honestly dont care.... I sleep better at night knowing that smarter people than you and me spent countless hours engineering and perfecting the new M3.

Not that pilots are dumb, because most are smart, but I would say it takes more intelligence to be an engineer. I have a pilot license too. I had to work for it, but I had to work much harder for a degree.
