So I heard a rumor... 11-99

So a friend of mine told me that you pay $4k a year and you contribute to this fund that gives support to families of fallen CHP officers. Then you get this cool looking 11-99 charity fund license plate. Which supposedly acts like a get out of jail free card when you get pulled over by CHP.

This past weekend, I went to Carmel and I actually spotted an 11-99 plate and I thought wow, that guy must be rich to afford the $4k a year fee....

Myth: Confirmed? Plausible? or Busted?

Myth. Search the forum. There are/were a few 11-99 plates for sale here.

I've heard of them working but only if you have the 11-99 drivers license holder that has your name on it since that proves you actually donated because there are alot of fake replica plates out there.

It helps sometimes.

There are a lot of knockoff plates 11-99 out there and the officers know that. When you donate to the foundation, they send you a piece of paper that shows your membership, and you're supposed to hand that to the officer with your I.D, Insurance, etc.. Some might give it some weight if it wasn't a serious infraction, but don't think of it as a complete 'get out of jail free card'.

(lol Phillip, your post wasn't there when i clicked reply... my sentiments exactly.

Probably not true. I'm on the east coast and "get out of jail cards" are A LOT more than a $4000/year donation. It's more along the lines of $2000-$4000/month and even then you're really just have more leniency when it comes to tickets. You can still get tickets and you definitely won't get away with reckless charges or anything like that.

I'd rather spend 4k a year in track time and not have the desire to speed on boring public roads. Some people are clueless.

I was thinking this. Why exactly spend that much to avoid speeding tickets (that aren't even 100% guaranteed) when you can use that money for mods for track use?

I can understand the appeal of this if you are filthy rich though.

I "heard" that these were discontinued as well, but at not sure. My friends wife got out of a ticket with it, but he did not, so not fool proof by any means of course.

Unless you're getting $4k worth of tickets a year, I don't see the savings. Lol

I believe the CHP no longer offers the plates anymore. One of the reasons being that you can buy fake ones of eBay that even come with the badge etc.

per the website linked above, it is $2500 for a lifetime membership and appears to be a tax deduction and for a good cause.
