I was thinking of a flip up one so it's full face but can flip up while waiting or what not.

Ok well maybe I'm not getting a helmet now... I was told to make sure it was DOT rated, so I picked one out and almost bought it. What's the deal? It has to be Snell? Is that a requirement? You would think any motorcycle helmet would be more than safe enough in a closed car...

The SA standard includes a rollbar multi-impact test, and M standard doesn't. |

Snell SA/K rating is for automotive motorsports and Karting. Snell M is motorcycle riding sports. with that said... the current Snell SA/K and Snell-M is: SA/K2010 and M2010. M2005 is still accepted because M2010 just came out. Some organizers might be so strict as to not let you race if your helmet is greater than 5yo. It all depends on the tech who's checking your car. If it's self-tech, it's on you! haha

Difference, from my understanding, is the M ones aren't all designed to be fireproof, while the Snell ones for cars are designed to be fireproof.
I think that is the major difference

fixed... The SA standard was designed for competitive auto racing while the M standard was for motorcycling and other motorsports. The K standard was released to accommodate helmets used in karting. There are three major differences between them: 1 - The SA standard requires flammability test while the M and K standards do not. 2 - The SA and K standards allow for a narrower visual field than the M standard (Some SA and K certified helmets may not be street legal). 3 - The SA and K standards include a rollbar multi-impact test while the M standard does not.

On an unrelated note, Windows 8 looks really cool. I'm going to install it on my desktop when it comes out. I have Vista right now, which sucks, and I've thought of upgrading to 7, but I think I'll wait for 8. Does anybody know when it's coming out?

I use a Pyrotect. I got it from SoloRacer.com. It was one of the few that came in XXL, and it was the lightest SNELL SA2010-rated sub-$300.00 helmet they carried. I'm actually pretty satisfied with it. Comfortable.
http://soloracer.com/pyrotectproair.html Organizers like SpeedVentures, BMWCCA, NASA, etc. require SNELL rating. Snell is approved to way higher standards, and every helmet has to be tested prior to approval. DOT is based on the honor system, and every year the Department of Transportation just randomly picks a handful of helmets throughout the world and tests them to their low standards. Since you're trusting your life to a helmet, even if a organizer doesn't require SNELL, it's probably best to go for one anyways. You never know if the DOT helmet you have is actually safe or not, since they're almost never tested, and even if tested, their standards are still pretty poor in comparison to SNELL Memorial Foundation.
