How can the poll be subjective? It asks for specific amounts and those responding can answer that question objectively - they know the answer.

He used the wrong word, but you'll still get the point if you skip out on the pedantism. The point is that as the poll is currently configured, the results aren't very meaningful because a really good portfolio for a 25 year old would be pitiful for a 50 year old.

I have no retirement account.
There is a total of three retirement accounts that are through my wifes job/income. She is a school teacher and we are essentially using her job for retirement and insurance. If she chooses to dump my ass I am screwed |

I think you would legally be entitled to a share of it. No different than the CEO that works his whole career and has massive retirement while his wife never has a normal paying job.

A disproportionate amount of young (<30) new BMW owners have family financial support so I'd imagine that issue is offset quite a bit.

This is meaningless for a whole host of reasons, starting with the fact that Bimmerpost is multinational and national differences are irreconcilable in the poll. For example, most employed Canadians will qualify for the Canada Pension Plan (approximately $12,000/yr) and then there's our Old Age Security benefit as well (I think the minimum is $6,000/yr).
That's not counting any individual savings or company provided pensions. Some people have defined benefit pension plans through their employer, some have defined contribution plans, and others have none. What about equity in your home? What about any investment property? Recreational property? In other words, whether I've saved less or more than anyone else on here is bloody irrelevant because our situations are all different. This is a completely pointless poll because the results are totally meaningless. |
